Virginia -- Hospice Regatta of Greater Hampton Roads

Competing Skippers 2001 -- Dave Alexander/Pete Wallio
Dave Alexander

Dave Alexander and Pete Wallio are co-owners of the J-22 Damn Blue Boat. Dave first met Pete in 1966 as a student in the Hampton Yacht Club Junior Program where Pete was an instructor! Dave has his practice of general dentistry in Hampton where his wife Phil and sons John and Michael also enjoy sailing. Pete, a former teacher, is an insurance agent with the Horace Mann Company and has two daughters, Tamara and Kristen.

In the five years they have raced together, the Damn Blue Boat team has enjoyed top ten finishes in the J-22 North Americans in New York. Minnesota and Maryland. They have sailed three J-22 World Championships in Texas, Ohio, and the Netherlands. Always in the top five high point for the Chesapeake Bay, the team has won numerous events on the bay. They have raced the J-22 Midwinters in St. Petersburg and New Orleans and all the East Coast Champs during this time.

Pete moved to the J-22 after sailing in the 5-0-5 for years. Dave raced primarily on keelboats for years but got the one design bug after competing in J-24s in Key West. Racing on keelboats and frostbiting in Lasers locally, both sailors teamed up in 1996 to win the Old Dominion University Corporate Challenge in FJs. Both sailors have given back to the sport with much time off the racecourse. Pete has helped with junior sailing at three area yacht clubs and ran a 5-0-5 National Championship. Dave was Junior Program Chairman for 5 years at the Hampton Yacht Club and was instrumental in hosting the Optimist Dinghy Nationals at HYC last year. He also is actively involved in the Hampton Roads Community Sailing Association, which began programs in high school and adaptive sailing.
