A WEEK ON MACMAHAN ISLAND, MAINE

A five-bedroom waterfront
cottage on beautiful MacMahan Island is yours for a week.
About 45 minutes from Portland, the Island is accessible only
by private boat. You can cross easily in kayaks, canoes, or
rent a skiff nearby. This summer island has about
30 houses, a chapel, and a post office. Watch the tides rise
and fall and lobstermen hauling traps while enjoying your
morning coffee on the front porch.
Formerly the summer home
of Dr. Benjamin Spock’s mother and rumor has it that
her friend Rachel Carson visited often from nearby Southport
Island and even wrote part of Silent Spring while staying
at the cottage.
The cottage and Island comes
equipped with the following:
Two kayaks
A sea monster
Fully equipped eat in kitchen
Boat loads of books and board games
Wonderful trails
Tennis courts
Stunning coastline
One moose
Nearby are beautiful small
towns of Bath, Wiscasett, Boothbay and Brunswick. Also Reid
State Park and its wonderful beaches are just a few minutes
away.
Available in September
after Labor Day

YOU’RE STEPPING
ON MY CLOAK AND DAGGER
by ROGER HALL
“A splendid contribution
to the nation’s hilarity….The funniest (unofficial)
record of rugged adventure in the OSS. And Hall has earned
his right to his laughter.”
—NEW YORK TIMES |
 |
With a sharp eye and wry wit, Roger Hall recounts his experiences
as an American Army officer assigned to the Office of Strategic
Services (OSS) during World War II. First published in 1957
to critical and popular acclaim, his book has become a cult
favorite in intelligence circles. He chronicles his experiences
from his time as a junior officer fleeing a tedious training
assignment in Louisiana to his rigorous OSS training rituals
in the United States, England, and Scotland for its Special
Operations unit.
Quick to pick up on the skills necessary for behind-the-lines
intelligence work, Hall became an expert instructor, but was
only reluctantly given operational duties because of his reputation
as an iconoclast. In his droll storytelling style, Hall describes
his first parachute jump in support of the French resistance
as a comedy of errors that terminated prematurely. His last
assignment in the war zone came when then Capt. William Colby,
the future head of the CIA, handpicked him to lead the second
section of a Norwegian special operations group into Norway
via Sweden.

| ROGER HALL, a 1941 graduate of
the University of Virginia, is also the author of two novels
and spent years as a freelance writer and editor, including
a stint as cartoon editor for True magazine in New York. He
lives with his wife, Linda, in Delaware’s Brandywine Valley. |

Stars and stripes abound on this all-american
afghan. Its field of stars is
assembled using blue and white motifs; then the stripes are worked
in groups
of double crochet stitches. Perfect for taking along on your Fourth
of July
picnic, this spirited throw will draw a rousing cheer!
Finished Size: Approximately 45" x 70"
