9th Annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta
August 27, 2011

Ahoy!
On behalf of the 2011 planning committee, welcome to the Ninth Annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Dinner and Regatta! Along with host partners, Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing Association, and our generous sponsors, we hope you enjoy this weekend of celebration and recognition of the wonderful work of Sharp HospiceCare.

Proceeds will benefit the Homes for Hospice campaign, an initiative to build residential, hospice care homes in San Diego County. As you know, Sharp HospiceCare is the only hospice in Southern California to operate this one-of-a-kind, palliative, hospice-care model that provides highly specialized care in a residential setting. In fact, this care model is so unique there are only 50 similar homes throughout the entire United States. Sharp HospiceCare currently operates two hospice homes, LakeView and ParkView, which together, have served over 4,500 families. Plans to build a third home in the South Bay
are now in the works, thanks to the support of our Homes for Hospice Campaign Chair, Scott McMillin.

Since 1991, the highly trained, dedicated professionals and volunteers from Sharp HospiceCare have provided end-of-life care to more than 19,000 individuals throughout San Diego County.

Thank you for your continued generosity and support during these difficult economic times. You are making an extraordinary difference in the lives of Sharp HospiceCare patients, families and friends. Our goal is to raise $225,000 in proceeds through this weekend’s event; we would not be able to accomplish this without your unwavering support.

Warmest Regards,
Bill Quealy Co-Chair & Maggie Watkins Co-Chair

More than $186,000 netted at Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta
Event united health care professionals, sailing community, local businesses and families to support hospice patients

SAN DIEGO — Sharp HospiceCare, Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing Association hosted the Seventh Annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta on Friday, Aug. 28 and Saturday, Aug. 29. The event netted a total of more than $186,000, which will support Sharp HospiceCare’s program to build hospice homes in San Diego.

The event launched Friday evening at the Hotel Del Coronado with a pre-race dinner and program emceed by former KNSD weather anchor, Pat Brown. The sold-out gathering included dinner for more than 360 guests, a live and silent auction and dancing. On Saturday, 19 privately owned yachts sponsored 270 guests who enjoyed a view of the race while on the water.

Saturday’s regatta drew 48 sailboat racers who competed on a course stretching from the north end to the south end of the San Diego Bay. The boat, Anarchy, skippered by Scot Tempesta, won the overall regatta, and will qualify to compete in the 2010 National Hospice Regatta Championship in Rochester, New York.

Two teams of doctors participated in an exhibition race, Physicians’ Challenge, aboard legendary America’s Cup sailing yachts, as part of fundraising efforts. Winning the event were doctors from Sharp Community Medical Group, who crewed Stars and Stripes, beating out challengers from Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group aboard Abracadabra.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Sharp HospiceCare, an organization that provides comprehensive care and compassionate support for patients and their families struggling with a life-limiting illness. The money raised directly funds Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice campaign, an initiative to build hospice homes in San Diego. The campaign has led to the completion of the organization’s second hospice home in Del Cerro.

Grossmont Healthcare District, the title sponsor of the regatta, donated $30,000 to the event.

Sharp HospiceCare Annual Regatta Raises $166,000
to Fund Programs for Local Hospice Patients and Families

SAN DIEGO  — Sharp HospiceCare, Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing Association hosted the 5th annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta on Friday, Aug. 24 and Saturday, Aug. 25. Competitors raced for a chance to compete in the 2008 Hospice Regattas National Championship in Annapolis, Maryland.

A record-breaking $166,000 was raised to support Sharp HospiceCare, an organization that provides comprehensive care and compassionate support for terminally ill patients and their families throughout San Diego County. The money raised will directly fund Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice campaign, which is helping to build new hospice homes, similar to the furnished, four-bedroom LakeView Home, in San Diego. Grossmont Healthcare District, the title sponsor of the regatta, donated $25,000 to the event.

The annual regatta launched Friday at the Coronado Island Marriott Resort with events for spectators and yachtsmen alike, including a pre-race celebration hosted by KNSD Channel 7/39’s Weather Anchor Pat Brown. The sold-out gathering included dinner, a silent auction and dancing to the music of Rockola.

On Saturday, spectators headed to the Coronado Yacht Club to enjoy lunch and an up-close view of the regatta from spectator yachts. In the premiere event, both experienced racers and leisure sailors set sail to race, which started in North Bay and ended in the South Bay near the Coronado Yacht Club.

Consistently ranked as the No. 1 integrated health care system in Southern California by Modern Healthcare, Sharp HealthCare is San Diego’s most comprehensive health care delivery system. It is recognized for clinical excellence for services in cardiac, cancer, and multiorgan transplantation, as well as orthopaedics, rehabilitation, behavioral health and women’s health.
