Hospice Southeastern Connecticut Racing Series a Great Success!

120 boats and over 300 sailors participated in the 20th Anniversary Hospice Southeastern Connecticut Regattas on July 15 and July 18, 2009 at the Stonington Dinghy Club, Thames Yacht Club, Niantic Bay Yacht Club and Mystic River Mudhead Benefit Regatta. From one-person Optimists to 40 foot boats with crews of 8, there was racing all along the Eastern Connecticut shoreline to raise funds for Hospice Southeastern Connecticut.

The winners of the Harvey N. Mallove Memorial Trophy this year were Peter Bergendahl in One More Time (Racing Class) and Peter Ross in Tynaje (Cruising Class).

Area sailors have raced for 20 years in support of the non-profit, community-based Hospice Southeastern Connecticut. Funds raised allow the organization to continue to provide compassionate care to patients with life-limiting illnesses regardless of their age, disease or inability to pay. Hospice Southeastern Connecticut cared for over 700 patients and bereaved family members in New London County this past year.

A 20th Anniversary Celebration Cocktail Party will be held on September 26. For more information, call (860) 848-5699 or email events@hospicesect.org.

July 18, 2009 Mudhead Benefit Regatta for Hospice Southeastern Connecticut.

The Mystic River Mudhead Racing Association announces that it has registered its annual Mudhead Benefit Cup for Hospice Southeastern Connecticut on July 18, 2009 as a certified Clean Regatta with the non-profit organization, Sailors for the Sea. By doing so, the association pledges its commitment to clean waters and shores, and vows to fulfill and encourage others to fulfill the goals and requirements set forth by Sailors for the Sea.

These goals include providing recycling containers on shore and encouraging their use, including a list of non-toxic cleaning products in each skipper’s packet, keeping the shore clean of debris and the possible disqualification of any boat that is observed discharging trash into the water

“This is our biggest sailing event of the year, and we are committed to running it as cleanly as possible, both on and off the water,” said Andy Stoddard, Commodore of the Mystic River Mudheads. “By signing up as a Bronze Level Clean Regatta, we hope to bring attention to the sailors in southeastern Connecticut of their responsibility for helping keep the waters and shorelines we enjoy clean and healthy.” Mudhead Race Committee Chairman, Greg Gilmartin, adds, “It’s common sense: no trash overboard, no discharging of waste, recycle your paper and cans, and have a good time on the water and at the party on shore.”

The Mudhead Benefit Race is a fundraiser for Hospice Southeastern Connecticut, a non-profit community-based organization that has been providing end-of-life care since 1985. Hospice Southeastern Connecticut is a member of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance, and is celebrating its 20th year of races. For more information or to register for the race, go to www.mudheads.org.

This year we celebrate 20 years of sailboat races in southeastern Connecticut, raising awareness of and funds for Hospice of Southeastern CT. What began as a one-day race out of Niantic Bay has grown to a number of races throughout the area allowing boats of all sizes and sailors of all ages to help raise money for Hospice of Southeastern CT.

Last year, over 120 boats pariticipated with at least 500 sailors in regattas ranging from Stonington to Niantic. Small dinghies to arge racer/cruisers joined at various clubs for Hospice Regatta races throughout the summer. One of the area's largest races, the Mudhead Benefit Regatta in July, will once again be sailed as a fundraisier for Hospice of Southeastern CT.

All sponsors are recognized in the Hospice Southeastern CT Annual Report, sent to 10,000 donors and friends, on our website and on signage at each race.

The Regatta Series benefits terminally ill patients and their families served by Hospice of Southeastern CT.
