Team Hartwell Lake SC - Michael Lague, Skipper

Michael Lague's J/80 Flash
Michael Lague and his team will be representing the Western Carolina SC Hot S'Yacht Hospice Regatta, which will be held this year on October 18-20 on Hartwell Lake. The regatta benefits Hospice of the Upstate.

This is Michael's second consecutive National Hospice Regatta Championship. He is currently a member of WCSC in South Carolina, and of Raritan YC in New Jersey. At age 38 he holds many club championship titles, a White Horse Dinghy World Championship and owns a J/80.

Being a Rhode Island native, his racing career began on Narragansett Bay at the age of 12. By age 16, he was alternate helmsman aboard Kemosabee, a Morgan 42, and captured the Narragansett Bay Yachting Association Championship. From 1980 - 1985 he ventured out and raced in the Barrington YC Sunfish Frostbite Fleet. In 1983 he finished second in the Save the Bay Frostbite Championship.

In 1992 and 1993 he raced his J/24 Eliane throughout Narragansett Bay. He won two Club Championships at Narragansett Terrace YC (1992 and 1993). In 1993 he won the Club
Championship at Cove Haven YC. Other major wins included; Mount Hope Bay Championship (1993), AlliedSignal Cup Overnight Race (1992), McKee Cup Champion (1992-1993) and Plastic Fantastic (1993). He also crewed in the J/24 fleet in the 1993 Bermuda Race Week.

After taking a six-year break to start a family, Michael now aggressively campaigns his J/80 Flash in many of the National and International events. In 2001 he took top honors at the J/80 East Coast Championship in Larchmont, NY; 2nd place, Annapolis NOOD; and 10th, J/80 World Championship in Newport, RI. He has sailed Flash in Key West Race Week (2000, 2001 and 2002). His championship win at the 2001 Hot S'Yacht Hospice Regatta included 2 first place finishes in the 3 race regatta. Michael and his team finished 2nd in the 2001 National Hospice Regatta Championship held in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
