Hospice Cup XXVIII Winners Announced
Sailors Augment Fundraising with a Record Total in 2009
Fall south-easterly winds provided perfect regatta conditions for over 75 boats and hundreds of sailors from the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC areas who participated in the Chesapeake Bay’s 2009 Hospice Cup on Saturday, September 26, off the mouth of the Severn River in the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to class trophies, the boats competed for several sponsored trophies that were awarded for both exceptional racing and special fundraising achievements. 2009 sailor fundraising brought in a record amount this year, with over $18,000 raised online alone.
Over 350 sailors, sponsors and hospice caregivers attended the post-regatta Shore Party at the Manresa on the Severn, helping to raise almost $200,000 through individual and corporate sponsor donations, along with the annual live-auction, that will help support hospices in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC areas.
Cedric Lewis of Mirage, from Annapolis, MD, was the winner of multiple awards including the highest honor, 2009 Hospice Cup Trophy recognizing the skipper for sustained high performance across three racing years (2006 – 2009), and qualifying him to represent the Chesapeake Bay regatta in 2010 at the Hospice Regattas National Championship against representatives from each of the 26 other hospice regattas held this year nationwide.
The Hospice Cup Trophy, sponsored this year by Robinson International, is one of the several special trophies underwritten by companies or individual contributions to the hospices benefiting from the Hospice Cup event.
The crew of Mirage was also honored with one of the oldest sponsored trophies, the Running Tide Trophy, which recognizes overall fleet performance.
A third honor to Mirage was The Sajak Family Foundation Trophy, sponsored by the family foundation of 1999 Honorary Chairman Pat Sajak and his wife Lesly, for best performance in Cruising One-Design was presented.
The Hank Lawton Trophy, sponsored by Hospice of the Chesapeake in honor their top fundraiser – also known as “Mr. Hospice,” – was presented to Bill Walczak, of Cheap Red for Top Crew Fundraising and raised over $6,200.
The Club Fundraising Trophy, sponsored by Chuck and Cecelia Thompson, in honor of Charlette Jeunette, was presented for the third consecutive year to The Chesapeake Bay Sabre Association.
The Hospice Class is a special nonspinnaker class for sailors who usually cruise more and race less less. In 2009, it was once again the largest participating class – with 19 boats – which also hosted several hospice caregivers to race with them as a way to recognize what those caregivers do for so many.
During Hospice Cup XXVIII, Hospice Class entry Graciella skippered by Vern Penner of Annapolis, MD, with his crew of seasoned sailors was recognized with the Hospice Class first place honor. Penner and crew also won the Martin F. McCarthy Trophy, sponsored by family and friends in his memory, for best in Hospice Class.
Additional Hospice Class trophy winners included, 2nd place: Michael Turner aboard Running on MT; and 3rd place: Suzanne Miller and Vicki Saporta aboard Pleides.
The crew of Pleides was also awarded the Lovelace/Sniegon Memorial Trophy, sponsored by Bill and Rose Lovelace, in recognition of the best performing Hospice Class boat with a hospice caregiver aboard. The hospice caregiver aboard Pleides, Carolyn Casey, was awarded the Allan C. Westcott Trophy, sponsored by Bob and Cindi Gibson in memory of Bob’s sailing mentor who benefited well from Hospice care.

Hospice Cup XXVIII Launches 2009 Online Fund Raising Campaign
June 15, 2009
Hospice Cup, Inc. has officially launched its online fund raising campaign for the 2009 Hospice Cup regatta. This marks the second year the nonprofit organization will be using online efforts.
In 2008, participants in the online fund raising efforts raised over $14,000 – almost double the amount raised in previous years – proving that providing payments online for donors and fund raisers is far easier, and faster, than writing and mailing a check.
Hospice Cup, Inc. will continue to encourage and reward fund raising sailors, crew and local sailing clubs with the annual The Hank Lawton Award (sponsored by Hospice of the Chesapeake) for the crew raising the most money; and the Club Fund Raising Award (sponsored by Chuck and Cecilia Thompson) for the sailing club raising the most money as a group. These trophies will be awarded at the post-regatta Shore Party on September 26, 2009.
In addition to sailors, volunteer caregivers and those who have been touched by hospice care are also being encouraged to create a personal online fund raising page in memory of a loved one. Each page can contain a photo and personal story about supporting Hospice Cup.
The Hospice Cup XXVIII start page is located at http://www.firstgiving.com/hospicecup. Instructions are also available on our web site at www.hospicecup.org.
April 30, 2009 - Hospice Cup, Inc. Announces the Return of Two Hospices
Calvert Hospice and the Talbot Hospice Foundation rejoin the annual regatta fundraising event during Hospice Cup XXVIII – September 26, 2009
Hospice Cup, Inc. will widen its geographic range of supporting hospices in 2009 as both Calvert Hospice and the Talbot Hospice Foundation return as participants in the annual regatta event that raises funds and awareness for hospices in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC areas.
The Talbot Hospice Foundation, of Easton, MD, was an early participant in the Hospice Cup during the early 1980’s; while Calvert Hospice, located in Prince Frederick, MD, returns after a one-year absence from participating in the annual event.
Julie Crocker, Executive Director of the Talbot Hospice Foundation, stated, “We are grateful to have the opportunity to join this collaborative fundraising effort with The Hospice Cup. Our hospice represents a large sailing community, and it makes sense for us to come aboard to raise funds for our Hospice programs in Talbot County.”
"Hospice Cup is a wonderful opportunity for hospices around the Chesapeake Bay to collaboratively raise awareness of the hospice mission," stated Lynn Bonde, J.D., MSW Executive Director Calvert Hospice.
The 2009 participating hospices currently include: Capital Hospice, Calvert Hospice,
Hospice of the Chesapeake, The Talbot Hospice Foundation and Montgomery Hospice. Each hospice must meet the standards of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
“We are very happy to have these two hospices returning to the event,” states Karma O’Neill, executive director of Hospice Cup, Inc. “Their presence as participants will expand the reach of our event to hospice supporters and, of course, more sailors.”
Co-Skippers from Annapolis Hospice Cup to Compete in National Championship
“Contraire” team will compete against winners from other hospice regattas around the nation, Canada and the USVI, June 5-7, 2009
After uncooperative weather conditions canceled the 2008 Hospice Cup racing, “Contraire” owner Steve Schaub, and co-skippers Curtis Wells and David Ginsburg, qualified for the Hospice Regattas National Championship to be held June 5-7, 2009, on Lake Ontario. Hosted by Rochester Yacht Club (RYC), the championship invites winners of hospice regattas that are members of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance which support over 50 community hospices around the U.S., Canada and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This year, 21 teams will compete for championship honors.
The Hospice Cup trophy, presented by the Annapolis-based annual regatta, recognizes sustained high performance of an individual skipper racing three consecutive years, regardless of changed boat, class or partners. The formula allows for circumstances like last fall’s non-race, allowing the Contraire team to be qualified based on their performance during the previous two years. Contraire, registered in the PHRF A3 division, won 1st place in 2006, and 2nd in 2007.
“While owner Steve Schaub will not be able to attend the 2009 championship in Rochester, his teammates, Wells and Ginsburg, who have shared duties as co-skipper in the Hospice Cup race for many years, will be representing the Contraire team. The race committee determined they qualify to represent Hospice Cup in the nationals.”states David Hoyt, Commodore of the Shearwater Sailing Club which hosts the annual race committee.
Held in Annapolis for many years, this is the first time that Rochester Yacht Club will manage the championship regatta. The championship will be in Rochester for three years, before moving to other locations in order to promote the network of hospice regattas in other areas.
Plans for the 2009 Hospice Regattas National Championship call for racing in 12 new Sonar sailboats outfitted with new sails, in a round-robin series that will maximize time on the water for all teams over the three-day competition. The Sonar, a 23-ft. one-design keelboat, races competitively with a skipper and three crew. Each suit of new sails will include a spinnaker, a main, and a jib small enough to be handled by nearly any size crew member.

Hospice Cup Regatta Event Raises Big Funds for Area Hospices
Despite Foul Weather and a Failing Economy
[Annapolis, MD] Despite foul weather and failing economy the sun was shining brightly on the Hospice Cup XXVII fundraising regatta, held on Saturday, September 27, which raised over $350,000 towards area participating hospices.
Over 80 sailboats and 360 sailors braved two hours of motoring around in hard rain and deteriorating visibility waiting for race committees to start or cancel the race. After it was finally called off at 12:30 pm, the boats headed back to their ports, and the sailors moved on to the Shore Party, held at the Atria Manresa overlooking the Severn River and the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
The sun peeked through the clouds in time for the Shore Party, which was attended by over 350 donors, caregivers, hospice volunteers and sailors - proof that support of hospice care was the important mission of the day. The turn to fair weather also gave the annual live auction a lift, which raised over $21,000.
“Just like life, the organizers and volunteers of the Hospice Cup XXVII overcame many challenges – from dealing with rain and mud and finding straw for the ground and additional parking in time for the event – to ensure all ran smoothly. Despite these issues, there was a huge turnout at the shore party, and the event sailed on,” stated Executive Director of Hospice Cup, Inc., Karma O’Neill.
Honorary Co-Chairs of the 2008 event were, Len and Dale Adler, on behalf of Capital Hospice; and Jim Mandrin and W. Dennis Gilligan on behalf of Hospice of the Chesapeake. At the party, Len Adler honored accomplished sailor, past Chair, and
co-founder of the event Al Van Metre, who passed away in March of this year.
While trophies for racers were not awarded this year, top sailor and club fundraisers were well recognized, as a record amount of over $13,500 was raised.
The Hank Lawton Trophy for Top Crew Fundraising, sponsored by Hospice of the Chesapeake, in honor the top fundraiser, was presented to Angelo Guarino of Severna Park, MD, of Bella Donna who raised over $6,000.

Hospice Cup XXVl
September 8, 2007
Hospice Cup XXVII – America’s Largest Charity Regatta – to be Held September 27, 2008, in Annapolis, Maryland
The race marks twenty-seven years of racing to raise funds to support Hospice programs in local communities around the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC areas.
[Annapolis, MD] The Hospice Cup XXVII – America's largest charity regatta – will be on Saturday, September 27, 2008. Entering its 27th year of racing on the Chesapeake Bay, to date the Hospice Cup has raised over $7 million to support Hospice programs in local communities around the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC areas.
In 2007, over $440,000 was raised by Hospice Cup XXVI sponsors, donors and participating fundraising sailing teams. Fundraising for the Hospice Cup is structured to ensure that funds are generated on behalf of each of the participating Hospices. The annual Hospice Cup race is a cooperative effort. It is organized by the all-volunteer Hospice Cup, Inc. (HCI) Board of Directors, an Executive Director, area hospices and hundreds of other volunteers. The race is managed by Shearwater Sailing Club, assisted by Storm Trysail Club Chesapeake Station.
Hospice Cup Executive Director Karma O’Neill states, "Plans for this year's Hospice Cup are underway. For 2008 we are planning new activities that promote awareness of Hospice Care and celebrate the Regatta's fundraising efforts. Additionally, we are hoping to attract new participants from the many Chesapeake Bay boat and social clubs to join in the Regatta”
Hospice Cup President Cullen Murray states, “We are grateful to the sailors, our donors, our board members, the participating hospices, and the many volunteers that help to make this event possible. With the dedicated support of every individual, the funds we’ve raised during the past 27 years have infinitely helped area hospices to give their patients, and their caregivers, the support and comfort they need to ensure quality end-of-life care.”
The Hospice Cup race serves as the local qualifying race for the National Hospice Regatta Championship. Winners from each of the twenty-four hospice regattas from around the United States compete annually and are all members of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance. The championship race for the 2007 qualifiers will be held May 9-11, 2008, in Annapolis, Maryland.
Supporting Hospice Cup means that there will continue to be no out-of-pocket expenses for any patient or family seeking the services of one of the participating hospices. Hospice Cup funds help pay the 25 to 30 percent of the expenses not covered by Medicare or private insurance. These dollars enable the hospices to provide skilled compassionate care, comfort and dignity to the terminally ill, their families and friends, regardless of their ability to pay. Hospice enables patients to carry on alert, pain-free lives so their last days may be spent in comfort, at home or in home-like settings. Hospice care concentrates on care, not cure. Bereavement counseling and support groups are part of hospice services after the loss of a loved one.
The 2008 participating hospices which include: Hospice of the Chesapeake, Capital Hospice, Montgomery Hospice, Calvert Hospice, and Community Hospices, must meet the standards of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Hospice Cup, Inc. is a proud member of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance, www.hospiceregattas.org.
The Hospice Cup is sanctioned by the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA) and counts for CBYRA season-long High Point competition. Hospice Cup, Inc. is a non-profit organization chartered under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia for the purposes of conducting a benefit yacht race and related events. Net proceeds are disbursed to the participating hospices on a pro-rated basis.

BIG CHANGES for Hospice Cup XXV
The biggest news is that Storm Trysail Club is partnering with Shearwater Sailing Club to provide TWO race circles -- a RED Fleet and a WHITE Fleet.
Having two, smaller fleets will allow better racing for all classes, with more flexibility to adjust for conditions.
Hospice Cup also continues to include the Hospice Class for people who do not usually race.

About the Race - Celebrating its 25th Anniversary
The Hospice Cup is sanctioned by the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA) and counts for CBYRA season-long High Point competition.
The race is hosted by Shearwater Sailing Club which also donates the trophies and net race entry fees. Hospice Cup XXIV
September 10, 2005
The oldest hospice regatta was wildly successful, though
not in the racing. Hospice Cup XXIV, raised almost $600,000
for eight hospices in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia, who
all agreed to dedicate 10% of the gross proceeds to hospice organizations
affected by Hurricane Katrina, to be donated through the National
Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. As for the racing, with
little or no wind, only 5 groups of the 90+ racing boats actually
sailed a race. However, a good time was had by sponsor-spectators
and sailors alike at the grand shore party. More details soon.
The Hospice Cup is sanctioned by the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing
Association (CBYRA) and counts for CBYRA season-long High Point
competition. The race is hosted by Shearwater Sailing Club which
also donates the trophies and net race entry fees. Starting classes
include handicap and cruising one-design boats such as PHRF, MORC,
J/105, Catalina 27, Cal25, Triton and Multihull plus a special Hospice
Class for sailors who do not usually race.
The race is the local
qualifying event for the National Hospice Regatta Championship -
the finest national championship ever offered in the field of charity
regattas. Winners of the many hospice regattas in 2003 - all patterned
after our Hospice Cup compete for national honors.
Hospice Cup makes a Difference

expenses not covered by Medicare or private insurance. These dollars
enable the hospices to provide skilled compassionate care, comfort
and dignity to the terminally ill, their families and friends, regardless
of their ability to pay.
Hospice enables patients to carry on alert, pain-free lives so

Hospice Cup XXIII
September 11, 2004
Hospice Cup makes a Difference
For many of the 92 crews racing in Hospice Cup XXIII yesterday,
it was a short and sweet experience.
In light and persistently shifting air, all 11 regular CBYRA classes
sailed a three-legged, 4.76-mile windward-leeward course, while
the six boats of the Hospice Class sailed a government mark course
of 4.6 miles. From the time the first starting gun went off for
the PHRF A0 boats at 11:05 a.m., the entire fleet, including the
Hospice Class which started a little over an hour later, had finished
by 2:15 p.m.
Hosted on the water by Shearwater Sailing Club, Hospice Cup XXIII
was a big success off the water, too. Final figures are not yet
available, but the event raised over $550,000 to directly benefit
six area hospices in Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Washington,
D.C.: Capital Hospice, Community Hospices, Hospice of the Chesapeake,
Montgomery Hospice, Hospice of Queen Anne’s, and St. Agnes
Hospice.
Because of its fundraising nature, Hospice Cup includes a special
Hospice Class, for boats and teams who do not normally race. Three
sponsored trophies recognize performance in this class: the Martin
F. McCarthy Trophy for the class winner; the Lovelace/Sniegon Memorial
Trophy for the top performer with a hospice caregiver aboard, and
the Allan C. Westcott Trophy for the caregiver aboard that boat.
This year, all three trophies went to team members aboard Valkyrie,
raced by Bob Muller and his Aunt Hazel, with caregiver Karen Bryant
aboard.
Earning nearly as many of the overall trophies was John Sherwood,
whose Grace team topped the 13-boat PHRF A2 class. Sherwood was
sailing with an all-female crew, attired in pink T-shirts, including
Bonnie Urban, Karla Alwood, Teri Nilsen, Cindi Gibson, Sue Mikulski,
Nell Cogner, and Jamila Mayo-Schagger.
The team had no previous experience sailing together, but quickly
coalesced into the day’s top team both in the PHRF Fleet overall
to win the Mills Fine Wine & Spirits Trophy, and turn in the
best performance in the entire fleet for the Running Tide Trophy.
The day’s big on-water winner of the Hospice Cup Trophy itself,
which recognizes the best performance over the past three years,
was Jack Biddle, whose Rum Puppy crew took third in the 11-boat
J/105 class this year, after placing second of 20 last year and
first of 24 in 2002. By virtue of this win, Biddle and his team
qualified to sail in next April’s National Hospice Regatta
Championship.
Winning the Hank Lawton Trophy for the top fundraising crew was
the Lift Ticket team, fourth in the J/105s, led by Jeffrey Harris.
The top Cruising One-Design trophies, the Sajak Family Foundation
award for best in this division and the new Mr. & Mrs. Steve
deCastro Trophy, for second place, also went to the J/105 class,
rewarding Stewart and Eric Greene and the Dove team and Art Libby
and his Results crew, respectively.

Hospice Cup makes a Difference
Over $400,000 dollars were raised by Hospice Cup sponsors and racers.
Supporting Hospice Cup means that there will continue to be no out-of-pocket
expenses for any patient or family seeking the services of one of
the participating hospices. The contributions help pay the 25-30%
of the expenses not covered by Medicare or private insurance, enabling
the hospices to provide skilled compassionate care, comfort and
dignity to the terminally ill, their families and their friends,
regardless of their ability to pay.
Hospice enables patients to carry on alert, pain-free lives so
their last days may be spent in comfort, at home or in home-like
settings. Hospice care concentrates on care, not cure. Bereavement
counseling and support groups are part of hospice services for family
and friends after the loss of a loved one.

HOSPICE CUP FACTS
Still "America's Largest Charity Regatta" -- 122 boats
racing, hundreds of spectators and guests enjoying the day, and
over $300,000 going to hospice care in Maryland, Virginia and Washington,
D.C.
Twelve classes of racing boats -- handicap and Cruising One Design,
plus the special Hospice Class for sailors who do not usually race
but want to show support for hospice care.
Over 600 sponsors and their guests on three spectator boats were
treated to a day on the Bay watching the huge fleet, and a grand
Shore Party with the sailors to wrap up the day.
Most classes had windward-leeward courses, 10 miles for the larger
boats and 6 miles for smaller ones. The Multihull boats and the
Hospice Class had an 8.1 mile course around government marks.
Race starts were delayed almost an hour as racers battled chop
and wind to reach the starting area. The southerly wind was about
15 knots most of the day, but seas were choppy from several days
of wind from the same direction. All classes had a brisk race. At
this time, final results are pending a hearing on one protest affecting
two classes (noted by a "P" in the right margin).
Sailors not asked to raise money, just sail. New this year, however,
was the opportunity for sailors to solicit sponsorships. The first
winner of the Hospice Cup Crew Fundraising Award is Angelo Guarino,
crew member aboard the Cal 25 Calibre, skippered by Ed Nusbickel.
Sponsors direct their contributions to one or more of the four
participating hospices. The hospices are the Hospice of Queen Anne's,
on the Eastern Shore; Montgomery Hospice; Hospice of the Chesapeake;
and The Hospices of the National Capital Region.
Shearwater Sailing Club provides the class trophies and donates
net race proceeds to Hospice Cup.
SPONSORED TROPHIES
To raise extra money and awareness for hospice care, some businesses
and individuals make multiple-year pledges which are recognized
in the form of sponsored perpetual trophies for special achievements on the race course. Those trophies and their winners are listed
at the end of the class results.
The first of the special sponsored trophies goes to 1st place in
Hospice Class. The Martin F. McCarthy Trophy, sponsored by family
and friends of Martin F. McCarthy, was announced by Ann Mitchell,
Director of Montgomery Hospice. It will be presented to Vicki Saporta,
skipper of Pleiades.
Within the Hospice Class are boats that have Hospice Caregivers
as crew. The Lovelace/Sniegon Memorial Trophy is for the best performing
boat with a Hospice Caregiver aboard, was presented by Bill and
Rose Lovelace to Vicki Saporta, skipper of Pleiades.
And a special trophy from Shearwater Sailing Club goes to the Hospice
Caregiver aboard that boat. The Allan C. Westcott Trophy was sponsored
and presented by Bob and Cindi Gibson to Harriet Hankins who sailed
on Pleiades.
The oldest sponsored trophy is the Ralph A. Beeton Trophy, for
superior helmsmanship on a U.S. Naval Academy boat. Sponsored by
First Virginia Banks, the trophy was presented by Patti DeBuck,
of The Hospices of the National Capital Region, to Midshipman Kerry
Scivcheky who was the helmsperson about the Academy yacht Bold.
A special trophy for local sailors is the Cathy Hartman Memorial
Trophy for the foredeck crew of the winner in the PHRF A0 class.
Sponsored by friends of Cathy Hartman, the trophy was announced
by Bill Steitz for whom Cathy Hartman crewed. The winner is Rick
Deppe, foredeck aboard Chessie.
The 1999 Honorary Chairman Pat Sajak and his wife Lesly really
got involved, and are sponsoring the Sajak Family Foundation Trophy
for best performance in the Cruising One-Design classes. Dick Ladd,
President of Hospice Cup, Inc., announced the winner, Jack Biddle,
skipper of Rum Puppy.
Usually The Hospice Cup trophy is the capstone of the awards ceremony.
Awarded for sustained performance in three consecutive years, the
winner was not announced at the Shore Party because the outcome
may have been been affected by pending protests. That is no longer
the case. The winner is David Sliom, who raced his boat Dancing
Bear more consistently well in the Hospice Cup races of
1999, 2000 and 2002 than any other skipper. The trophy will be awarded
in a special ceremony, and David will be invited to compete in the
2003 National Hospice Regatta Championship against winners from
the 16 other hospice regattas that took place this year nationwide.

Shearwater Sailing Club supports that decision
and, after consulting
entrants and others connected with CBYRA Area 3 racing, has decided
to
cancel the race as well. Every sailor from whom Shearwater Sailing
Club
has an entry by Friday evening, September 14, will be directly notified
by
the club of this change.
The hospices of Hospice Cup XX will not suffer
financially from these
decisions, as sponsors' contributions and pledges will still be
distributed to them, including Shearwater's donation for race entry
fees.
Payments made to Hospice Cup, Inc., for advance
dinner tickets will be
directed to the hospices unless requests for refund are made by
phone to
703-460-9219 or in writing to Hospice Cup, Inc., P.O. Box 5122,
Arlington
VA 22205.
As stated, race entry fees will as usual be donated
to the hospice
cause, or refunded to sailors who contact the club by email or by
writing to the club at P.O. Box 3312, Annapolis MD 21403.
