Havre de Grace, MD – The 7th annual Harford Hospice Regatta set a new record by netting over $66,000.  All proceeds benefit the adults and children served by Harford Hospice, a member of Upper Chesapeake/St. Joseph Home Care.

“The success of this year’s Harford Hospice Regatta was due in part to our new water front view next to the historic Concord Point Lighthouse,” says 2006 Honorary Chair Shari LoPresti.  “Once again our dedicated volunteers and supporters helped us surpass our fundraising goals,” says LoPresti, who has served on the Regatta Committee since 2000 and is the primary advocate to promote hospice care awareness.

More than 500 people gathered in the shore party tent on the shores of the Susquehanna with dinner donated by Outback Steakhouse. Entertainment included music and dancing, a silent auction, plant and money wheels, and an exotic vacation raffle.

Due to weather conditions, the race was rescheduled and completed with Tom Schwartz and crew taking first place. Four fleets were represented in the race.

.

Initiated in 1999, the Harford Hospice Regatta has grown in size and recognition and is anticipated by both avid sailors and citizens alike.  This year’s race held extra excitement with the addition of the sailing crew Team Havre de Grace, whichplaced 4th in the National Hospice Regatta Championship held in May in Annapolis, Maryland.

All proceeds go directly to Harford Hospice to support their programs and services to patients in need of palliative care.  Hospice cares for terminally ill adults and children, usually in the comfort of their own homes.  Teams of health professionals and volunteers provide relief from physical, mental, social, and spiritual pain.  Harford Hospice cares for residents of Harford, Cecil and Baltimore counties and Baltimore City.

Five classes of sailboats raced along the Susquehanna River, and the five winners were awarded their trophy steins during the Shore Party. Because Hurricane Isabella destroyed the beautiful promenade that traces the lower Havre de Grace shoreline, guests were not able to watch the race itself, but reconstruction scheduled for this summer will allow the crowed to watch the sailors compete in Regatta 2005.

The sponsors gathered inside the Maritime Museum for a lovely hour of conversation amid the maritime lure. The finest of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres were beautifully presented by Chef’s Expression to about 100 sponsors and their guests.

Shore party guests began to arrive at 6:30, and after an invocation by the Chaplain of Harford Hospice, all 600 guests were treated to a fabulous steak and chicken dinner generously donated and served by Outback Steakhouse of Bel Air. The evening flowed as guests circulated among the various activities including dancing, gaming, and bidding on silent auction items. The Pyrates Royale added a maritime flair with boisterous songs of the sea and lost loves.

Air Jamaica and Air Jamaica Vacations generously donated an all-inclusive 3 night holiday as a raffle prize for Regatta 2004. Raffle tickets were sold both before the event and during the evening, but the crowd stood silent awaiting the lucky winning name drawn at 9:30 PM that evening.

Information about Harford Hospice, its philosophy, its staff, and its mission was communicated to the guests by brief statements from the Harford Hospice President Shawn McNamara and Upper Chesapeake Health CEO and President Lyle Sheldon. Pages dedicated to Harford Hospice staff and volunteers helped recognize the vital work that takes place every day. One team member was publicly recognized as the Team Member of the Year by Dr. Pete LoPresti, Volunteer Medical Director. Printed table tents allowed guests to read comments and extracts from thank you notes received from grateful families, as well as thoughts from volunteers and staff about why they choose to work for hospice.

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, donors and guests, Harford Hospice received net proceeds totaling $61,000. Sponsors, guests, volunteers and sailors alike should be proud of their contributions to a great evening celebrating Harford Hospice.

Proceeds will benefit Harford Hospice programs. Hospice cares for terminally ill adults and children, usually in the comfort of their own homes. Teams of health professionals and volunteers provide relief from physical, mental, social, and spiritual pain. Harford Hospice, a division of Upper Chesapeake/St. Joseph Home Care, cares for residents of Harford, Cecil, and Baltimore counties and Baltimore City without regard to ability to pay. In 2002, Harford Hospice provided services to almost 300 families. Chris Bennett recalls how Harford Hospice helped her and her mother. "They gave my mom the dignity of life, and all of mom's wishes, and all that she wanted so she could die at home," says Chris. "We were blessed that we had a nurse and aide, and a social worker. We couldn't ask for more delightful people," explained Chris.

Hospice Regattas have become popular across the United States since the original Hospice cup was held by the Hospice of Northern Virginia, Inc. in 1982. Since that time, over $3 million has been raised for Hospice support programs in local communities. Harford Hospice Regatta 2002 raised over $27,000. Harford Hospice Regatta is a proud member of the National Hospice Alliance, a national network of sailing regattas dedicated to raising money and community awareness about hospice care.
