6th annual Dr. Lory Schults Memorial Lady Skipper Regatta
August 22, 2009

November 4, 2009 - “Thank you for giving me Lory’s Place…” These few words say it all. Your generosity to the sixth annual Dr. Lory Schults Memorial Lady Skipper Regatta makes it possible for children and adults who are in the midst of chaos and stormy weather to have a safe place until the waters calm. This year we reflected on the generosity of our community and the loving hand it has offered thousands of participants since our opening in November of 2004. Your support to our event helped us raise over $100,000 to continue providing services for grieving children and their families.

On August 22, for the first time in six years, the weather was unsafe for our Lady Skippers. We postponed the sailing aspect of our event until October 3, when it will be combined with the annual St. Joseph River Yacht Club Chili Regatta. We hope that you will consider joining us at the Yacht Club on that date to set sail with the Lady Skippers in a morning sail followed by the men serving up delicious chili for all.

Our evening dinner and auction continued as planned with 270 friends and supporters coming together with giving hearts. The program and spirited auction overflowed with love, compassion, and giving for the children and families touched by Lory’s Place.

Thank you for contributing to the extraordinary success of our sixth annual Dr. Lory Schults Memorial Lady Skipper Regatta. We hope that you reflect on the gift that you have provided to those working through grief at a time when they most need it. Our program year has begun and hundreds of children and their families from Allegan, Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties in Michigan, as well as from Elkhart and South Bend in Indiana, are taking the courageous step of accessing the bereavement resource services of Lory’s Place – at no charge.  New this year is a Suicide Loss group for adults who have felt the pain of losing someone to suicide.

We couldn’t do this without you. On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and families at Lory’s Place, we express our gratitude for your support. As always, please contact me if you have any questions or comments related to our event, Lory’s Place, or your support. We hope that you will join us for next year’s event – until then, have a wonderful fall!

Gratefully,
Lisa Bartoszek
Director of Lory’s Place and Hospice at Home Bereavement Services

5th annual Dr. Lory Schults Memorial Lady Skipper Regatta
August 23, 2008

On Saturday, August 23 the 2008 Regatta took place at the St. Joseph River Yacht Club and Vineland Center. With 80 degree temperatures and partly-cloudy skies, it was a good sailing day. 12 boats and 103 ladies participated in the sailing. Each lady skipper received a t-shirt, a NHRA yellow hat and flag. Crew volunteers sold t-shirts and lunch tickets. 110 adults and 11 children joined us for lunch and the award ceremony. Boat registrations, lunches, t-shirts, and the other activities generated over $1,995.

Whimsical toys were the theme of the festive $75-ticket dinner and auction. 222 guests enjoyed roast beef roll-ups, chicken marcella, and vegetarian lasagna for dinner, 58 silent auction items, and 22 live auction items (19 were planned). Entertainment during the cocktail hour was provided and a cash bar with donated beer and wine was available.

A professional charity auctioneer consulted during the procurement process and suggested which items would become silent and live items as well as the live auction item order. At his suggestion, most items were packaged as baskets. Silent auctions items generated $10,852. Live auction items generated $32,700.

The Fund-a-Need allowed people to donate to Lory’s Place at the $5,000, $2,500, $1,000, $500, $250, and $100 levels. This addition to the auction added another $25,500 to event revenue.

Kangaroo auction was an addition to our event. This generated an additional $1,445.

The $100-a-ticket raffle continued this year with 200 tickets sold. The prizes were $5,000 and Whirlpool Duet Washer/Dryer. The winner of the $5,000 donated the funds to Lory’s Place.

Sponsorship included 43 individuals, organizations, and businesses. The total amount was $13,650.

Over 40 volunteers participated in the success of this event. Two Crew Liaisons scheduled volunteers for the day and evening. Volunteers assisted with procurement of auction items, selling raffle tickets, creating baskets, selling t-shirts and lunch tickets, greeting, auction recording, and clean-up.

As of this date, the overall net revenue from the 2008 Regatta is $105,253. This is an increase of over $1,400 from 2007. The planning committee met on September 10 to identify areas of improvement for 2009.

Thank you for all of your help to make this event a success. This event has grown to the point that we need to have committees working year-round. At our October meeting, we’ll discuss our 2009 Regatta committee structure and ways that you can begin to help.

4th annual Dr. Lory Schults Memorial Lady Skipper Regatta
August 4, 2007

$5,000 Raffle Winner Gives Back Money

St. Joseph, MI –  On Saturday, August 4, Abonmarche President, Chris Cook, won the $5,000 Lory’s Place Lady Skipper Regatta Raffle prize and then donated the money back to Lory’s Place. Over the summer, two-hundred raffle tickets  were sold to help raise money for Lory’s Place, the area’s only grief healing and bereavement resource center for children and their families. “I was thrilled that I won,” states Cook. “Lory’s Place is a service to the community. I’m honored to support it anyway that I can.” Nancy Burch, won the raffle second prize of a Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer with pedestal stands.

The raffle was one of several ways that the public supported the fourth annual Lady Skipper Regatta held in memory of local physician, Dr. Lory Schults, who tragically died in an automobile accident in 2004. “We had seventeen boats and hundreds of people involved in the event,” states Lisa Bartoszek, Director of Lory’s Place. “This year we raised over $100,000 to help cover the cost of serving over 200 children and their families, as well as responding to crisis situations, and providing community outreach and education,” continues Bartoszek.

One hundred and thirty-eight women participated in the sailing event. Race winners: Spinnaker Division - Rush, with lady skipper Michele Ahern; Jib & Main Division – Indentured, with lady skipper Lori Boekeloo.

Lory's Place was created by Hospice at Home, Inc. to help children and their families work through their grief so they can become capable, healthy, and optimistic about the future. The services are free to all who need them. Lory's Place is fully funded by the generous donations and gifts of our community through events such as the Lady Skipper Regatta.

2006 Dr. Lory Schults Memorial Lady Skipper Regatta

The 2006 event was held on Saturday, August 26, 2006, a beautiful fall day in SW Michigan.  The Regatta was held at the St. Joseph River Yacht Club and featured 19 boat entries with a total of 106 women on board and another 30+ men tagging along as well.     Lake Michigan offered some challenges, with only mild winds blowing, but we all had a great time!

Taking great advantage of the nice day and scenic setting, we all enjoyed a cookout on the lawn of the Yacht Club, post-race.  We served lunches of grilled hot dogs/brats, chips, baked beans and beverages.  Several family members joined the racers and volunteers/staff and Crew members were present as well.  It was a relaxing afternoon, with a sense of fellowship present.  The 2006 winners in each division were announced, winning crew pictures taken and talk of next year’s event began!

In the evening, a “Lady Skippers of the Lake” festive event unfolded at Berrien Hills Golf Club, just a short distance away from the Yacht Club.  We made the move this year to Berrien Hills so we could accommodate more dinner/auction guests and were so pleased to sell out our allotted amount of 220 guests.  Dinner/auction ticket prices were $50 and included a delicious prime rib and shrimp/scampi skewer buffet dinner in a large room that was masterfully decorated in a nautical theme.

We had a silent as well as a live auction, offering more than 60 items of great variety.  The evening was entertaining and meaningful, as 220 people learned more about Lory’s Place and the services we provide, as well as had a great time.

Raffle tickets were sold and the grand prize of $5000 cash added to the excitement of the 2006 Regatta.  The other raffle prize was a Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer, graciously donated by Whirlpool Corporation.

The 2006 Regatta utilized over 40 volunteers in various capacities and were organized by the Crew liaison.  It was wonderful to see so many people involved with the entire Regatta event, whether as a boat owner or crew member, Regatta sponsor, lunch attendee, raffle ticket purchaser, dinner/auction attendee, auction item donor or volunteer for the event.

We are already busy thinking and planning for next year’s event and hope to improve in areas we have identified as opportunities for growth.  With research and planning, we hope to offer an even more enjoyable and financially successful Regatta in 2007.

The Dr. Lory Schults Memorial Lady Skipper Regatta - FIRST YEAR
September 17, 2005

Start of the regatta
Ken Zimmerman photo

We had a very successful Hospice Regatta, The Dr. Lory Schults Memorial Lady Skipper Regatta, on Saturday, September 17, 2005. The participation this year was greater than previous years. We gave an extra 3 sec/mile handicap for each woman on board. Some boats had as many as 18 to 20 women as crew members that slowed many boats to a crawl in the light 2-3 knots of breeze for the regatta. A formal dinner and auction were added to the agenda that raised the fund-raising aspect of the regatta.

The historic Lighthouse Depot on Lake Michigan that now houses the Saint Joseph River Yacht Club, the host of the regatta. The nautical and historic nature of the turn of the century building made for a great venue for our regatta. Everyone had a great time and best of all we raised over $40,000 for Lory's Place!

Lory's Place - A grief healing and education center for children and families.

Helping children with grief is critical to their future success.
Unaddressed grief has been shown to have a negative impact on a child's physical and mental well-being. When children feel understood and accepted, they are better able to cope with their feelings of grief.

Lory's Place is Michiana's new grief healing and education center.
It provides peer support group services for grieving children and their families in Southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana. The Center is a focal point for raising awareness and supporting the needs of children who grieve. The Center also offers an Anticipatory Grief program to assist those experiencing the anticipated death of a love one due to illness or disease.

The service is free.
Services are free to all who need them. Donations are gratefully accepted from those who wish to show their appreciation for the work being done
