Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman hosted the 8th Annual Lake Norman Hospice Regatta & Party the weekend of May 22-24. These events raised more than $60,000 to support the mission of improving the quality of life for those with life-limiting and terminal illnesses in a nine-county region.

Rumbullion was this year’s champion, crewed by (L to R) Captain, Kenneth “BJ” Jones and his wife, Emily, and daughter, Allison. This win entitles them to compete in the National Hospice Regatta, to be held in the spring of 2009.

7th Annual Hospice Lake Norman Regatta & Party
May 26 & 27, June 1, 2007

Local Sailor to Compete in Hospice Regattas National Championship in Rochester, N.Y. in June 2009

Kenneth “BJ” Jones of Cornelius has been invited to compete in the Hospice Regattas National Championship, which will be held June 5-7, 2009 in the waters of Lake Ontario, hosted by Rochester Yacht Club (RYC).

The new venue and dates for the Championship were just announced by Jean Swink Kluttz, president of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance (NHRA), which presents the National Championship each spring.

“Our National Championship gives us an opportunity to showcase the many local Hospice Regattas and to celebrate their winners,” Kluttz said. “The NHRA board of directors is delighted to accept the generous offer of Rochester Yacht Club and local volunteers to organize the Championship for 2009.”

Plans for the 2009 Hospice Regattas National Championship call for racing in 12 new Sonar sailboats outfitted with new sails, in a round-robin series that will maximize time on the water for all teams over the three-day competition. The Sonar, a 23-ft. one-design keelboat, races competitively with a skipper and three crew. Each suit of new sails will include a spinnaker, a main, and a jib small enough to be handled by nearly any size crew member.

“Certainly, the availability of new boats and sails will ensure an equal fleet for teams from the eligible hospice regattas,” Kluttz added.

The host committee for the 2009 Hospice Regattas National Championship is being co-chaired by Hank and Mary Stuart and John and Lauren Doyle of RYC. The Stuarts and Doyles previously co-chaired Rochester’s local Hospice Regatta in 2003, and all four have been active on host committees for national and international sailing competitions.

“The Rochester area offers great racing conditions, especially for such a competitive one-design boat,” said Hank Stuart. “RYC and the host committee look forward to welcoming all these winning teams from local hospice regattas to Rochester and offering them great racing for a great cause,” he added.

“We are excited to have BJ, and his crew represent Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman in the National Hospice Regatta Championship in Rochester, New York,” said Nancy Cole, Manager of Special Events for Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman. “BJ and Emily Jones have consistently supported the Lake Norman Hospice Regatta by sailing and serving on the Regatta committee.”

About the Hospice Regattas National Championship:

Held annually since 2000, the Hospice Regattas National Championship was the first sailing championship for charity in the U.S. To promote local regattas’ efforts to support hospice programs, the event offers three days of sailboat racing for one winning skipper and crew from every local hospice regatta that has completed two regattas. Eight of the nine previous Championships have been conducted in Annapolis, where the original Hospice Cup event began in 1982. The 2001 Championship was held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and the National Hospice Regattas Alliance board hopes varying the Championship location will allow more people to learn about the local regattas and about hospice.

About the Rochester Yacht Club:
Incorporated in 1877, the Rochester Yacht Club celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2002 and is still going strong. The club’s first regatta was held in 1877 with eight sail boats competing, and it hosted 104 boats at the J/22 World Championship in August 2008.  RYC also hosts Rochester’s local Hospice Regatta in odd-numbered years; the Rochester event will be held at RYC on August 21-23 this year. The club’s purpose is to provide and encourage interests and instruction in areas of yachts and yachting, seamanship, racing and traditions of yachting. By car, RYC is seven miles from the heart of Rochester, Monroe County, New York, and it is located on the south shore of Lake Ontario and accessible from the Genesee River.

About the National Hospice Regatta Alliance:

The NHRA is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) association of hospice regattas that independently raise money and awareness for hospices in their communities. It supports a rapidly expanding nationwide network of regattas that publicize Hospice care -- from the East to the West Coast, from the Great Lakes to Florida. NHRA is an all-volunteer organization helping hospice regattas grow and learn from each other, and promoting Hospice care nationally. Since the first hospice regatta in 1982, more than 20,000 sailors, sponsors and volunteers have raised more than $12 million to provide hospice care to terminal patients and their families without regard to ability to pay.

5th Annual Lake Norman Hospice Regatta
May 14-15, 2005

Congratulations to Team Outrageous and skipper Michael Jones of Wrightsville Beach, NC for his victory in the 5th Annual Lake Norman Hospice Regatta. With this win, Jones qualifies to represent the Lake Norman Hospice Regatta in the 2006 National Hospice Regatta Alliance Championship, where he and his team will compete against the winners of the other 22 events scheduled across the country this year.

Team Outrageous and skipper Michael Jones

Five races were completed in light to moderate (approximately 4 to 12 knot) breezes in the 2 day event hosted by Lake Norman Yacht Club, with assistance from Outrigger Yacht Club and Peninsula Yacht Club, other clubs located on Lake Norman. This year's event touted a total of 39 boats competing in 3 divisions. The Championship division was comprised of 13 boats ranging in PHRF from 51 to 261. Division 2 was comprised of 11 boats with ratings from 114 to 279. A third division consisted of 15 Lightnings, the result of combining their 5th annual Voodoo regatta with the Hospice event.

Overall winner Michael Jones is a former member of both Lake Norman Yacht Club and Outrigger Yacht Club, and trailered his SR-33, "Outrageous" from the coast to compete in (and win) two charity regattas at Lake Norman in three weekends. His crew consisted of many familiar faces at Lake Norman, including brother Richard Jones (2-time past Champion on Soverel 33 "Outrageous"), Gene Rohrer, Dan Myers, "Hobie" Cadieux, and James Bible. The crew was rounded out by Michael's wife, Robin Jones, Durham resident Mike Williams, and newcomer to the sport, Matt Hamric. Michael, Richard, and Dan have been sailing with and against each other on Lake Norman and many other venues for the past 30 years; Gene has been doing the same for more than 15 years.

Other winners at the regatta included Robin & Leanne Roberts and Joe Waters (Ultimate 20, "Vertigo"), who placed second in the Championship division and first in Spinnaker B. John Ogden (Santana 30/30, "Schock Therapy"), also one of the two regatta co-chairs, sailed to a first place in Nonspinnaker A, and Mike Wasner (Catalina 22, "Rode Trip") took first in Nonspinnaker B. The Lightning class winner was Augusta, GA sailor Bob Harkrider (#14532, "BooNooNooNoos").

It is worth noting that the winners of each of the Division 1 and Division 2 classes (Spinnaker A & B and Nonspinnaker A & B) took 5 straight bullets (A.K.A. firsts).

The event, in combination with the Party At The Point, netted approximately $27,000.00.
