Arch Farmer Cup - Albemarle Hospice Regatta
August 7-9, 2009
Hospice Regatta raises money, awareness
by Thom Chalfan, Sports Editor, Daily Advance
Saturday, August 08, 2009 - The Albemarle Hospice Regatta was a success, even before the proceeds were counted.
“We had a wonderful day — no thunderstorms, plenty of sunshine,” Albemarle Hospice Regatta Chairman Sean Robey said. “The wind was a bit on the light side, and we’d have liked to have had a little more, but everybody was able to sail.”
The regatta itself drew 36 entries in nine different classes of racing. “(The entrants were) from adults to children,” Robey said. “I don’t know how old the youngest ones out here were, but I would make a guess that they were under 10. We were very excited. It was a wonderful turnout.” Between the weather and the boats, the regatta ran 34 races.
“We got three races in on the big boat course, we got four races in on the sunfish course and some of the youth actually got six races in,” Robey said.

The goals of the hospice regatta are to raise money for our participating, non-profit hospices and to raise public awareness of hospices everywhere. In this year’s regatta, hosted by the Pasquotank River Yacht Club, participating sailboats will compete on a closed course in the Pasquotank River. The race is open to sailors in spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes and includes a cruising class for sailors who do not normally race but want to show their support for Hospice care in North Carolina. This year the regatta will also be sponsoring sunfish and open classes for youth and adult small boat sailors. Additional classes may be established when four boat of the same class register before July 25th.
There is no better way to help raise awareness for Hospice Care and have a lot of fun doing it.

On the Pasquotank River, Elizabeth City NC - First
Year!
Two great events, one great day!
While setting the date for the Albemarle Hospice Regatta, it became apparent to combine it with our already established premiere sailing event, the Archer Farmer Cup.
Archer Farmer
Dedicated to a life-long love of sailing, Archer has contributed more to sailing in our community than any other person in the past or in the foreseeable future. With more than 50 years of racing both locally and on the Chesapeake, Archer continues to give back to the community even now, helping to head up our summer youth sailing program.
"Arch was my sailing mentor. If not for him, I would have never returned to the thrilling world of sailing,” says Jim Elliott, a member of the Pasquotank River Yacht Club. "He is also the person who recruited me as an instructor for our summer youth sailing program."
