Renowned Fireball National and North American Winners To Compete in Local Hospice Turkey Shoot

Now that our local hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta is the largest in the country, it is beginning to gain national attention and draw serious sailors from other states.

Patrick Crump and Ned Goss are trailering their boat from Tampa, Florida to compete Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th in the annual Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta at Yankee Point Marina.

Skipper Pat Crump and crewman Ned Goss sail their winning Fireball

Pat has won the Fireball Nationals six times, five times as a skipper and once as a crew. He also won the North American championship in 1999, and he has won most Fireball titles at one time or another including some Canadian events. Crump has been sailing Fireballs for 32 years. He started sailing them as a junior sailor, and though he has sailed many other boats, the Fireball remains his favorite. He grew up sailing Thistles in Connecticut where his father raised his kids as a sailing and racing family. Through the years, he raced Blue Jays, Lightnings, Thistles, Stars, 505s, Flying Dutchmen, Lasers, and other small boats, as well as a fair number of large boats.

“Lady Issy” Damages Docks but The Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta is Still a Go

Intrepid, civic-minded sailors undaunted by Isabel’s havoc ready their boats for the 13th annual Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta October 10, 11 and 12th.

Boats were hauled and secured in creeks all over the bay in preparation for Isabel’s arrival. It’s no small task to haul and then re-launch 78 boats, but that’s what has been happening on Myer Creek at Yankee Point Marina. A full court press is on so all contenders will have their boats in the water and ready for the regatta.

View The Turkey Shoot Regatta from The Miss Ann - The Tides Inn will once again provide regatta spectators a special opportunity to view the final race of the two-day Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta from their 124-foot luxury yacht. This year’s cruise is being sponsored by the Tides Inn and the Bank of Lancaster.

Join those aboard the Miss Ann on October 12th

Spectators will see a wide variety of beautifully maintained older boats such as sloops, yawls, and skipjacks as they race for the finish line. Those aboard the Miss Ann will enjoy a buffet lunch and the camaraderie of fellow boating enthusiasts as they watch the yachts follow a “pursuit” race course toward the finish line on Sunday October 12th.

The Rev. John Farmer, a boating enthusiast, will serve as narrator, providing spectators with details on each of the boats. As they cross the finish line, they will sail around the Miss Ann so that the spectators can cast their votes for the best-looking sailboat. The skipper of the winning boat will be awarded the Most Beautiful Classic Boat Trophy.

The Miss Ann has a long and colorful history. In August 1924, John H. French, a Detroit banker, industrialist, and yacht collector, hired D.B. Dobson of New Bedford, Massachusetts, to design the fastest and most stable twin diesel yacht of the time. Shortly thereafter he contracted with Pusey & Jones, a well-known shipyard of Wilmington, DE, to transform Dobson's design into one of the finest diesel yachts in America.

A Dismasting at Last Year's Start Didn't Deter Lee Williams from being First to Register for This Year's Turkey Shoot Regatta.

In an unfortunate accident, at the start of last year's regatta, Lee Williams' centerboard daysailer "Poe Bird" was dismasted. Refusing to concede, the resolute Doctor applied a splint to the fractured spar. The spirit was willing, but the aluminum was weak, and Lee had to retire and race another day.

May 2003 - Three More Hospices Join to Sponsor the Annual Turkey Shoot Regatta

Nothing succeeds like success, and this year, the eighth year the Turkey Shoot Regatta has been run as the major fund-raiser for the all-volunteer Hospice Support Services of the Northern Neck, three more local hospices have decided to form an alliance and help sponsor the event. The goal is to register more than 125 boats, and the Support Services of the Northern Neck hopes to raise over $30,000 in the 2003 regatta.

Riverside Tappahannock Hospice, Riverside Walter Reed Hospice out of Gloucester, and newly formed Hospice Support Care of Middlesex County will for the first time, join the Hospice Support Services of the Northern Neck in the Turkey Shoot fundraiser this October.

Hospice Support Care of Middlesex County and Hospice Support Services of the Northern Neck are both non-profit community based organizations that provide non-medical support by a staff of trained volunteers for end-of-life care in the patients' home. There is no charge for the
services or equipment provided by these hospices.

Riverside Tappahannock Hospice and Riverside Walter Reed Hospice are both part of the Riverside Health System. They are medical hospices providing nursing and medical care as well as trained volunteer support under the guidance of the patient's own physician. They are paid by insurance plans, however, they do not turn anyone down for lack of payment. Funds from
fundraisers, such as the Turkey Shoot Regatta, will help those who do not have insurance coverage.

A Buoyed Spirit - Irondequoit's Keith Burhans happily sails on after surfacing from adversity - By Gary Fallesen

(April 13, 2003) — To say the waters were rough for Keith Burhans in 1995 would be an understatement. We’re talking tsunami.

Keith Burhans, in front of his Sonar-class sailboat on the dock at the Rochester Yacht Club, is a cup-is-half-full optimist. When his world was turned upside-down by mishaps in 1995, he emerged with a positive attitude that motivates others. [Day in Photos]

It was a titanically bad time in the Irondequoit sailor’s life. His paternal grandmother died in January of that year, his dad died in June, and he lost his legs in a boating accident in July. ’’Everybody has to go through adversity,’’ says Burhans, 46. ‘’You have to handle things as they come along.”

Burhans surfaced from the depths of that year as one of America’s brightest stars in the world of disabled sailing. Combine that with his gratitude for hospice care -- which guided his family through the end of his dad’s battle with cancer -- and you have a passionate skipper participating in the National Hospice Regatta this weekend in Annapolis, Md. ’’Unless you’ve ever used it, you wouldn’t know what they’re doing,’’ Burhans says about hospices. ‘’There are so many distractions when you’re grieving. The help they give is priceless.’’

Burhans -- with an able-bodied crew consisting of his brother Bryan and fellow longtime Rochester Yacht Club members Marc Fischer and Terry Shannon -- beat 84 boats to win the fourth annual Rochester Hospice Regatta in August and qualify for the national championship. He did so in the name of Robert ‘’Woofie’’ Lawless, an old sailing mate who died in the care of the Genesee Region hospice in September. ’’He’s very motivational and so focused,’’ Fischer, 38, says about Burhans, who taught him how to sail 20 years ago. ’’Talk about a guy who took an awful experience and made another life’s goal, and achieved it at that. It would have been so easy for him to stay at home and feel sorry for himself. But he took the opposite tack. He’s an amazing person.’’

Nightmare of 1995 - Burhans is a fourth-generation president of his family owned, 135-year-old business -- specialty advertising distributor Harry H. Moore Corp. He is married (wife Susanne) and the father of two girls, Kristen and Allison. He was sailing through life when he struck 1995, a year that could have sunk his heart, if not his spirit, if he hadn’t been anchored in his Christian faith. His dad, William, who had battled cancer six years before, was on his second hip replacement before Christmas 1994 when they discovered his left hip had been invaded with bone cancer. The following month, Keith’s grandmother died. Then, as William’s fight with cancer wound down, the family found itself spending much of the last month of the 67-year-old’s life at the Niagara Frontier Hospice. It made a deep impression on Keith, who says now: ‘’If I couldn’t expire at home, going to a Sunset House or comparable hospice care is the next best option.’’

Keith Burhans needed medical attention himself on July 30, 1995, and in the days and weeks that followed. While fishing with his daughters, Keith’s boat was struck by another boat. As he dove to rescue one of the girls, the propeller from the other boat slashed his shins. He lost both legs below his knees. Miraculously, Burhans was back sailing that fall. A crew member aboard the 1985 world champion 8-Metre boat, Golden Feather, and a longtime Soling racer, he landed on both artificial feet. ’’He has redefined ‘the glass is half full,’ ‘’ says Fischer, who is Burhans’ tactician in Annapolis. ‘’He’s the epitome of an optimist.’’

Pleasure boating - ’’He’s a pleasure to sail with because he can make a frightening situation not so frightening,’’ Fischer says. At the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials in Punta Gorda, Fla., Fischer was skipper and Burhans the tactician of their Soling class boat. The pair were in the middle of two Great Lakes Championship seasons. ’’We were in a 45-knot squall, the boat was full of water, and he’s laughing,’’ Fischer recalls. ‘’He’s laughing in a very tenuous situation.’’ His attitude has not changed. Fischer says the 1995 boating accident was ‘’just one more challenge that he had to face in life, that he was not going to let it get ahead of him.’’

By 2000, Burhans was crewing for the U.S. team that finished seventh at the Paralympics in Sydney, Australia. He remains aboard the country’s top boat in the Sonar class. Burhans, quadriplegic skipper Paul Callahan of Providence, R.I., and new hand Mike Hearsey, a one-legged sailor from Hyannis, Mass., recently won the disabled Mid-Winter championship in St. Petersburg, Fla. ’’We’re getting more confident,’’ Burhans says, referring to the team’s bid for a spot in the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Greece. ‘’We came out of this regatta knowing we have some darn good speed.’’ That’s because of the seat that Burhans put his skipper in . ’’It took 1 1/2 years to design and build a seat allowing him to rotate from side to side,’’ Burhans explains.

Previously, Callahan was positioned stationary on one side of the boat. While other skippers could shift weight to the downwind side, Callahan could not. Despite that weakness, Callahan and Burhans became the top Sonar team in America.

Setting Paralympic sail - ’’When I met Paul he was a brand-new sailor,’’ Burhans says, ‘’and he was by far the most compromised sailor who wanted to play at this level.’’ No other Paralympic skipper is a quadriplegic. To reach the Olympics of disabled sailing, Burhans recognizes, was ‘’a big deal.’’ He was proud of the team’s finish in Sydney, but he figured Callahan would not settle for anything less than a medal. ’’I knew he was going to ask me (to sail for the Paralympics) again,’’ says Burhans. ‘’This technology we have now is a huge leap.’’ That was exhibited in their Mid-Winter victory over four other U.S. boats, four teams from Europe, and the Paralympics bronze medalists from Canada. ’’It was a good chance to see how we stack up with the international guys,’’ says Burhans, who will race for the Disabled World Cup in September in Athens and hopes to qualify for the Paralympics in November in St. Pete.

Preparing for the Paralympics is a second job. - As much as he might love it, there is still a lot of work involved. He readies and maintains two boats -- one in Florida and the other Sonar at the Rochester Yacht Club. Sailing in the National Hospice Regatta is a break for Burhans. The Rochester crew is using a loaned J/105 racing yacht, the same boat as the 17 other hospice regatta winners who qualified. This weekend of races is ‘’an opportunity to bring awareness to an organization that clearly has an underappreciated mission,’’ Burhans says. ‘’They do good work.’’ Priceless work. Something Burhans values from past experience. An appreciation, like others he has, that was raised from the sunken moments in his life.
