Hospice Regatta raises money, awareness
by Thom Chalfan, Sports Editor, Daily Advance
Saturday, August 08, 2009 - The Albemarle Hospice Regatta was a success, even before the proceeds were counted.
“We had a wonderful day — no thunderstorms, plenty of sunshine,” Albemarle Hospice Regatta Chairman Sean Robey said. “The wind was a bit on the light side, and we’d have liked to have had a little more, but everybody was able to sail.”
The regatta itself drew 36 entries in nine different classes of racing. “(The entrants were) from adults to children,” Robey said. “I don’t know how old the youngest ones out here were, but I would make a guess that they were under 10. We were very excited. It was a wonderful turnout.” Between the weather and the boats, the regatta ran 34 races.
“We got three races in on the big boat course, we got four races in on the sunfish course and some of the youth actually got six races in,” Robey said.

Some call them 'mid-wives to the soul'
By Robert Kelly-Goss , Albemarle Life Editor
Saturday, August 01, 2009 - Jackson Hoffler sits in his den watching Fox News in his recliner. He’s surrounded by trophies of his days hunting wild game, and memorabilia that speaks of a noble time when he was the youngest member of the D-Day landing force during World War II.
Hoffler, 80, is as comfortable as can be expected for a man who has terminal liver cancer. His comfort is thanks in large part to the help of a hospice team.
That team is a part of Albemarle Hospice, a non-profit organization whose goal is to help each person live each day to the fullest and focus on a quality of life.

21 Sailing Teams to Compete in Hospice Regattas National Championship June 5-7 in Rochester
Sailing teams from San Diego, Ft. Lauderdale, Annapolis and Michigan City, Indiana will compete June 5-7 on Lake Ontario against five upstate New York teams and 12 others in the Hospice Regattas National Championship, hosted by Rochester Yacht Club (RYC).
“Our National Championship gives us an opportunity to showcase the many local Hospice Regattas and to celebrate their winners,” said Jean Swink Kluttz, president of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance (NHRA), which sponsors the championship regatta.
In 2008, NHRA sanctioned 27 local hospice regattas, all with the goal of raising funds and awareness for hospice programs in their communities. Winners of 21 local regattas are expected to participate in the 2009 National Championship.
These teams will compete in 12 new Sonar sailboats outfitted with new sails, in a round-robin series that will maximize time on the water for all teams over the three-day competition. The Sonar, a 23-ft. one-design keelboat, races competitively with a skipper and three crew. “Certainly, the availability of new boats and sails will ensure an equal fleet for teams from the eligible hospice regattas,” Kluttz added.
