The President's Letter: There is a lot of good news: The Alliance
has finished its incorporation process, has received clearance from
the IRS to be called a "not-for-profit organization," selected a logo
and intends to "ride the crest" of the new wave of electronic communications-hence
the newsletter name "WAVES."
At the Nov. 6 Annual meeting of the Alliance in McLean, Va. eight
of the thirteen regattas held last year were represented. Three new
events joined the network: VNA & Hospice of Northern California had
a regatta on San Francisco Bay, hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club;
Genesee Region Home Care/Hospice, Rochester, N.Y. had a race hosted
by the Rochester Y.C. and the Western Carolina Sailing Club changed
an existing race, the Hot S'Yacht Race, into a benefit for Hospice
of the Upstate, Anderson, S.C. Net revenues from all '99 regattas,
distributed to 26 hospice programs, exceeded $700,000. Well done,
crews! A California Crest: The inaugural race for San Francisco, May
29-30, welcomed a fleet of 70+ boats. Very strong winds meant a lot
of crew members were needed to manage the boats in choppy water with
the ever present powerful currents in that Bay. Parties at the yacht
club both nights were enlivened with exciting stories from each day's
racing. Food was plentiful and there was dancing for those not too
exhausted. Mark Rudiger, winning Navigator for the Whitbread Round
the World race, was a featured speaker at the awards party Sunday
night; KPIX, Channel 5, gave media support. Jim deWitt, nationally
recognized marine artist, furnished artwork and logo design on posters
and T-shirts. Doug Nugent, past member of the Canadian National Sailing
Team and a Snipe class champion, was selected to represent San Francisco
at the hospice regatta championship in May.
Other Crests: A quantum leap in net proceeds for Hospice Care
of Broward County, Miami/Dade @ $67,000, Hospice Care of Rhode Island
@$58,625 and Hospice Cup, the regatta network founder, @$365,000.
Pat Sajak, popular host of TV's Wheel of Fortune, was the Honorary
Chair of the Hospice Cup and delighted the 350 guests with his personality
and charm. Pat is also underwriting a $10,000 trophy, proceeds of
which will be divided among all six 1999 hospice beneficiaries of
the Cup. Jim Muldoon, President of US Sailing, won the Hospice Cup
and will be a competitor at the May championship.
Additional topics discussed at the Nov. meeting were the Participation
Agreement and the revenue distribution formula for championship sponsor
funds. A revised Participation Agreement and revenue distribution
formula will be voted on at the next annual meeting of the Alliance
which is now scheduled for 4 p.m., May 6, in Annapolis, during the
championship weekend. All Alliance organizations are requested to
send a delegate to that meeting. At present there are two classes
of organizational members: Participating and Provisional. Participating
members are those who have held a hospice regatta and signed an Agreement
to join the Alliance; Provisional members are those who have applied
for membership but have not yet held an event. The web site has a
current listing of each class.
A motion to have the Alliance open an Endowment Management Account
was passed. This account has been opened at Merrill Lynch and enables
the Alliance to receive gifts of stock and other securities while
earning maximized investment income during times when monies are not
being used to pay expenses. Championship Crest: AGA
Correa, jewelry and trophy design firm from Edgecome, ME. has offered
to donate three customized trophies for the championship AND three
trophies for each of the year 2000 hospice regattas (sixteen at last
count). Many thanks to Jim Fernald, Volunteer Chair of the Hospice
Regatta of Maine for arranging this generous offer through Tony Correa.
REMINDER: We still have not heard from all regattas
if they are interested in using these trophies. Time is running out
on this offer. J Boats Chesapeake and J Boats Newport have agreed
to be two of the sponsors for the championship. Watch for listing
of the event on their web site and in their advertising.
Championship
Breaking Wave: Urgent! We have not received all the names AND
ADDRESSES of competitors. The Notice of Race is on the web site
and will be mailed to competitors who have sent in their mail addresses.
All competitors must register with the Race Committee to be eligible.
The RC needs to know how many from each regatta are attending.
Willard Bond Artwork: Willard has again agreed to authorize
use of a new image for Alliance members who want to use it. This opportunity
is available to both Participating and Provisional members and has
been well received in the past. FYI newcomers, Willard's artwork has
been used in brochures, on posters and T-shirts and on stationery
related to regatta events. Willard's publisher, Bill Rommel of Arnold
Art, Newport, RI., will have a copy of the artwork after Feb. 1. Watch
the web site for news of this offer. Questions may be directed to
Bill Rommel at 1-800-352-2234.
On the web: Notice of Race, Revised Data Base for Alliance members,
Updated information about each regatta when it is received.
