Jack Beatty Hospice Memorial Regatta REGATTA HOISTS SAILS FOR HOSPICE Niagara Hospice provides end-of-life comfort, care and support to Niagara County individuals and families faced with end-of-life illness. Jack Beatty Hospice Memorial Regatta The 2006 Jack Beatty Memorial Hospice Regatta is in memory of Jack Beatty, who was a member of the Youngstown Yacht Club for many years. Jack was vital and active, encouraging new sailors, cruising his boat “Perbacco!” and living life to the fullest. His wife, Gerry Anne, Co-Chair of this year’s event, remembers what an effort it was for Jack to get ready for the Niagara Hospice Cup Charity Regatta of 2001. With the help of family, friends and crew, Jack achieved his goal to race and placed third in the White Sail Division. Jack passed away while under the care of his loving family and Niagara Hospice five days later on August 16, 2001. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness of (and financial support for) Niagara Hospice. This regatta will qualify one team to compete in the ‘NATIONAL HOSPICE REGATTA CHAMPIONSHIP’ in the Spring of 2007. Niagara Hospice cares for patients with end-of-life illnesses and supports family and loved ones through the illness and dying process. Their goal is to help patients live in comfort and dignity, surrounded by the warm and loving presence of loved ones.

April 28, 2004 - Press Release Title: NIAGARA HOSPICE TEAM WINS NATIONAL REGATTA
On April 16 the 5th annual National Hospice Regatta Championship took place at Annapolis, Maryland. The Bada Boom team skippered by Chris Kastan represented Niagara Hospice well, taking first place out of 13 teams. The Kastan team, racing on board Bada Boom, earned eligibility for the National Championship after winning the 4th Annual Jack Beatty Hospice Memorial Regatta last August 9 that took place on Lake Ontario. When asked about the experience of advancing to the national competition, Kastan stated: "It was a superlative event, from the organization, to the volunteers, the fraternity, the race management, the competition, and especially to the cause it benefits." The original and so far only national sailing championship for charity, the National Hospice Regatta Championship hosted winning skippers and teams from the 13 hospice regattas held in 2004 throughout the U.S. The hospice regattas raise funds and awareness for the charitable work of hospices. Hospice care helps adults and children who are terminally ill, without regard to ability to pay. Many hospice services are not covered by insurance. Each program treats and comforts terminally ill patients and their families, at home or in the hospital or long term care facility. The National Hospice Regatta Championship is organized by the National Hospice Regatta Alliance, a network for the growing number of hospice regattas held nationwide. The Alliance helps new and existing hospice regattas be successful, and hosts the championship to promote and support them all. Its activities are supported by national sponsor money and in-kind contributions or discounts. Racing was held on the Chesapeake Bay, off Annapolis, Maryland with race headquarters stationed at Mears Marina, located in historic Eastport just minutes from downtown Annapolis.
