On the day before the Niagara Hospice Regatta (Friday, July 10th) we hold a Niagara River Cruise and Clam Bake event. This event allows us to raise funds for Hospice in a mutually beneficial way! Each party is assigned a private yacht for a 3-hour scenic cruise up the Lower Niagara River.
Our guests sit back, relax, enjoy a cold beverage or glass of wine, munch on some hors d'oeuvres , and the enjoy the many beautiful sights along the lower Niagara! One of the most unique features of this event is the fact that we offer live jazz music out on the water. Using an ultra-quiet Honda generator, the Junk Yard Dogs will crank up the volume and entertain hundreds of guests that have rafted their boats or float along with the group.
Following the 3-hour boat cruise, Hospice guests are treated to a first class meal including steamed clams, fresh corn-on-the-cob, grilled chicken, Italian sausage, hot dogs, hamburgers, homemade macaroni and potato salads, desserts and much more!
Back inside the clubhouse, row after row of beautiful gifts are on display for guests to bid on. Beautiful jewelry, nautical necessities, clothing and apparel, vacation and golf packages, gift certificates, and much more! Everything has been generously donated from the local community and helps to add to the fund raising for Niagara Hospice!

Jack Beatty Hospice Memorial Regatta
August 11 & 12, 2006
The 2006 Jack Beatty Memorial Hospice Regatta is in memory of Jack Beatty, who was a member of the Youngstown Yacht Club for many years. Jack was vital and active, encouraging new sailors, cruising his boat “Perbacco!” and living life to the fullest. His wife, Gerry Anne, Co-Chair of this year’s event, remembers what an effort it was for Jack to get ready for the Niagara Hospice Cup Charity Regatta of 2001. With the help of family, friends and crew, Jack achieved his goal to race and placed third in the White Sail Division. Jack passed away while under the care of his loving family and Niagara Hospice five days later on August 16, 2001.
The purpose of this event is to raise awareness of (and financial support for) Niagara Hospice. This regatta will qualify one team to compete in the ‘NATIONAL HOSPICE REGATTA CHAMPIONSHIP’ in the Spring of 2007.
Niagara Hospice cares for patients with end-of-life illnesses and supports family and loved ones through the illness and dying process. Their goal is to help patients live in comfort and dignity, surrounded by the warm and loving presence of loved ones.

On April 16 the 5th annual National Hospice Regatta Championship
took place at Annapolis, Maryland. The Bada Boom team skippered
by Chris Kastan represented Niagara Hospice well, taking first place
out of 13 teams. The Kastan team, racing on board Bada Boom, earned
eligibility for the National Championship after winning the 4th
Annual Jack Beatty Hospice Memorial Regatta last August 9 that took
place on Lake Ontario. When asked about the experience of advancing
to the national competition, Kastan stated: "It was a superlative
event, from the organization, to the volunteers, the fraternity,
the race management, the competition, and especially to the cause
it benefits."
The original and so far only national sailing championship for
charity, the National Hospice Regatta Championship hosted winning
skippers and teams from the 13 hospice regattas held in 2004 throughout
the U.S. The hospice regattas raise funds and awareness for the
charitable work of hospices. Hospice care helps adults and children
who are terminally ill, without regard to ability to pay. Many hospice
services are not covered by insurance. Each program treats and comforts
terminally ill patients and their families, at home or in the hospital
or long term care facility.
The National Hospice Regatta Championship is organized by the National
Hospice Regatta Alliance, a network for the growing number of hospice
regattas held nationwide. The Alliance helps new and existing hospice
regattas be successful, and hosts the championship to promote and
support them all. Its activities are supported by national sponsor
money and in-kind contributions or discounts.
Racing was held on the Chesapeake Bay, off Annapolis, Maryland
with race headquarters stationed at Mears Marina, located in historic
Eastport just minutes from downtown Annapolis.

3rd Annual Niagara Hospice Regatta in memory

FRIDAY
This year's event opened with Friday afternoon's 'Mighty Niagara
River Cruise'. In this new component of the Hospice Regatta, our
guests were treated to a scenic trip up the Lower Niagara River,
hors douvres, libations and live entertainment from a band on a
pontoon boat. The well attended, traditional Friday Evening Clam
Bake and auction treated sailors and guests alike to a classic YYC
sunset with live entertainment. As the crowd began to shrink, a
group of die-hards sparked up the portable fire-pit on the club
lawn. Vic Snyder, the winner of the liquor and snacks gift basket
auction item, (aptly named 'The Basket of Doom') donated it to this
gathering. As the fire burned into the wee hours of the morning,
the dynamic presence of John Beatty, one of Jack's sons, reminded
this group time and again, what it was about Jack that was so loved.
SATURDAY
15 boats turned out for this year's sailing competition. After waiting
for the wind to fill in and settle down, Principal Race Officer,
Patti Schrack and her team got off 4 decent races in very challenging
light air conditions. Those very same conditions played right into
the sweet spot of this year's overall winner, Bada Boom, Chris Kastan's
Henderson-30. This team did a great job of staying out of trouble
and letting their boat do the work. Saturday afternoon/evening's
dock party included an elegant dinner, more live entertainment,
the prize-giving and yet, another beautiful sunset. After dark,
the fire pit and 'basket of doom' reappeared, and a somewhat more
subdued late-night crowd solved the worlds problems in classic fashion.
