Celebrating Fourth of July on Land and Water

Sandusky OH, Saturday July 4 - Stein Hospice celebrated the Fourth of July on land and water. At the Sandusky Sailing Club, about 25 boats set out Saturday morning for the Stein Hospice Cup/Sandusky Islands Race, but many sailors grew frustrated with the light winds and dropped out. Not Russ Krock, whose Schock & All crossed the finish line at 8:40 p.m. Krock, from the Sandusky Sailing Club, will represent Stein Hospice next year at the Hospice Regattas National Championship in Rochester, N.Y.

Conditions were much more favorable on land. More than 200 men, women and children ran and walked in the Stein Hospice 5K Regatta Run, which began and ended at Shoreline Park in Sandusky.

Stein Hospice Cup 2003
July 11-12, 2003

2003 Event - "A Regatta for Hospice"

Bruce Roberts and his red boat were one of the many sailors unable to finish the rugged weather during the Sandusky Islands Race. His spirit and crew persevered and that red boat named Outlaw took both the Harry Boissoneault Memorial Trophy and Hospice Cup during the fourth annual Stein Hospice Cup Regatta.

Along with the pair of trophies, Roberts and his crew aboard Outlaw advance to the National Hospice Regatta Championship race next April in Annapolis, Md. "I think it's great to be able to represent the club and our local hospice," said Roberts, a Sandusky Sailing Club member. It's quite an honor. "It was a perfect sailing day. We knew we did pretty well, but the big question is how long is the race."

"We have a lot of people in our agency who enjoy sailing and with great lake and bay sailing in our back yard this (race) seemed to be a good fit Stein Hospice executive director Jan Bucholz said.”

Roberts and his Outlaw crew, which included Brian Huntley, Fred Babson, Regan Cole, Kevin Bache, Bill Semans, Butch Lang and Jim Fischell, topped the Performance Handicap Racing Fleet with a corrected time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, 50 seconds.

The corrected time was the top time in the PHRF A class, which earned Outlaw the Boissoneault Trophy, named in honor of the late Harry Boissoneault. Roberts and his crew nipped John Barker and his SSC crew aboard the T-10 entry Bear for first-to-finish honors and the Hospice Cup trophy.

There were a total of 19 boats in the competition, with 13 boats in the Lake and six in the Care-Giver Class. The Lake Class was managed by the Sandusky Sailing Club while Harbor Bay Yacht Club ran the Caregiver competition.

Stein Hospice raised nearly $6,000 from last year's event and expected to match that amount in 2003. "Which is great because every single cent gets pumped back into the community," Bucholz said. "Plus, this is a lot of fun. "Any time you do fundraising, you're trying to do two things: Raise money for your mission and you're looking for exposure. Hospice is tough because we're dealing with the end of life and sometimes that doesn't get much attention, but our greatest support comes from people who have used our facility."

All six boats in the Caregiver class were from HBYC, with Hubert Dauch taking top honors aboard Feelin Groovey with a time of 1:02.13. "We're really doing well for a fourth-year event," Bucholz said. "We really got ahead of what we were projected to have last year and it's stayed that way. "We have over 30 volunteers who donate day after day of their time setting this up and tearing it down. Our volunteers run this event."

2002 Event

The first annual Community Celebration at Battery Park kicked off the festivities in style. Outback Steakhouse donated over 300 meals of chicken, steak, and all the trimmings. That FunknBluez Band kept the audience moving throughout the evening.

the three amigos
The three amigos Louie Palmer, Bubba Herzog and Billy Semans, kept the drinks flowing and the crowd happy. Even Mother Nature showed her support with a break in the oppressive heat.

“We were thrilled with the turnout at the Community Celebration” said Stein Hospice Executive Director, Jan Bucholz. “With this being the first year of this celebration and the fact that it is an outdoor event left us with a number of unknown variables.” “It all came together beautifully and the town is still talking about what fun it was.”

A legion of dedicated volunteers under the watchful eye of Hospitality Chair Kelly Bleile made the whole evening seem effortless.

Saturday brought the regatta events. Starting with the Caregiver Class in a poker run, followed by the skippers meeting and the departure of the boats for the lake course. Again the weather was a gift. An eerie (or is that Erie) calm in the morning turned to a nice breeze out of the East. The racers on the lake course ended up sailing in a steady 12-knot breeze. Nineteen boats registered for the races; eighteen sailed in the two races; four on the poker run and the remaining fourteen were on the lake course.

The race committee again provided a great course. The results from all classes are listed below.

The racers returned to a feast prepared by galley chief Chef Lynn Nelson and her crew of
culinary volunteers. Special thanks to Ron Abbott and Rose Pollack, the prep chefs of the decade. Ron made this a two-day event pulling galley duty both days.

Thank you at all the individuals who supported Stein Hospice through this two-day event. We continue to provide service to the community through the support of the community.
Thank You!

Boissoneault Trophy presented Saturday at Stein Hospice Cup

Harry Boissoneault was the epitome of a fine sailor: eager to learn how to master wind and water, fiercely competitive but unwilling to skirt the rules, gifted with an outgoing personality and a lively wit. He was also devoted to his family, concerned about his friends and
generous with encouragement or congratulations for even a stranger. And he loved a good time. All of Boissoneault’s attributes will be out in force for the third annual Stein Hospice Cup, a sailboat racing event and celebration of life July 12 and 13 at Battery Park and the Sandusky Sailing Club in downtown Sandusky. And although Boissoneault won’t be present -- he died four years ago at the age of 68, a victim of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) -- he’ll be there in spirit.

Boissoneault’s wife of almost 50 years, Jeanne, will be on hand to present the Harry M. Boissoneault Memorial Trophy to the overall winner of the event, a one-race competition over an Olympic course on Lake Erie. The race is open to sailboats under PHRF, MORC and JAM rules, as well as multihulls, Tartan 10s, J-24s and J-22s. “Harry would be so proud, if he knew,” said Jeanne, who sees Boissoneault’s spirit of generosity reflected in the compassion of hospice
care. Stein Hospice assisted his family in the last days of his three-year battle with the muscle-robbing illness often called Lou Gehrig’s Disease. “Hospice is such a wonderful service. They were there for us when we really needed them.”

Boissoneault began a quarter century of sailing in 1972 when he bought a 21-foot sailboat at the urging of his oldest son. The family remembers his early days on the water with amusement: finishing last in races, failing to secure the boat to a dock properly and floating off alone among the tethered boats in Put-in-Bay harbor, mixing up signals with his crew and reducing them to spasms of laughter. But he became so immersed in the sport he even
dreamed it -- and once was found sleepwalking, shouting in his sleep at the house next door, “Come up! Come up!” (Turn into the wind! Turn into the wind!)

Sailing was a family affair for Boissoneault, with Jeanne as the “shore coordinator” of food and transportation, and their children -- Bryan, Cindy, Linda and Harry Jr., and eventually their spouses -- as crew. There are now 10 grandchildren, several of whom are also becoming sailors. “Shockwave,” their 35-foot Schock, became well known in PHRF competitions around the Great Lakes. Fittingly, it was “Shockwave,” with Harry “Hank” Boissoneault Jr. as skipper, that won the first Stein Hospice Cup event, in 2000.
