Competing Skipper 2001 -- Robert Porter

Bob Porter and the crew of HARRIER
will represent the Oswego Hospice Regatta at the National Regatta
held during March in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Bob has been racing
for over 20 years on Lakes Michigan, Huron and Ontario. He sails
under the burgee of the Oswego Yacht Club where he has been the
PHRF fleet captain for three of the past four years. Bob teaches
Emergency Medical Service personnel and authors paramedic textbooks
to support his sailing habit.
HARRIER is a term sometimes used
to describe a long distance runner, what Bob was some 30 years and
100 pounds ago. HARRIER is a tartan 30 C built in
1978 and represents the classic, heavy displacement, cruiser/racer
of that era. She currently races the waters of Lake Ontario though
she plans to try her hand at the Chicago, and then the Port Huron,
to Mackinac Races in 2001.
HARRIER, Bob and her crew have
done very well over the last few years. In 1998 HARRIER
claimed overall championship honors at the Eastern Yacht Circuit
(East-end of Lake Ontario) Regatta. In 1999 she won both the PHRF
and Offshore Divisions of the Canadian Olympic Regatta - Kingston
and repeated that performance in 2000. In 2000, HARRIER
also went on to win the Lake Yacht Racing Association Regatta (LYRA
is the second oldest Regatta in the world, second only to the America's
Cup). There she won her division of the three long distance races,
winning the overnight -Freeman Cup race overall and placing a close
second in the buoy races. Based upon these performances, HARRIER
was named Lake Ontario Boat of the Year for 2000.
