Barbara Reed may believe
in Risky Business, but winning in
hospice regattas seems to be a fairly sure thing. She and her team
will
represent Hospice Regatta, held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This
year's regatta will be celebrated May 17-18, 2002, benefiting
HospiceCare
of Southeast Florida.
Barbara qualified as the Florida team skipper for the first national
championship in 2000, and last year sailed as an extra, local crew
in
the 2nd championship held in Ft. Lauderdale. Now she returns as
team
skipper, to the 3rd championship in Annapolis, Maryland.
Serving as Commodore of Gulfstream Sailing Club in Ft. Lauderdale,
of
which she has been a member for 10 years, has taken increasing amounts
of her time and she has not been able to race as often as she would
prefer. She had been crewing on local Hobie 16s and cruising in
the
Bahamas for a few years, but started racing keelboats when she joined
the club, crewing on a J-37C. The skipper provided her with an excellent
training course and years of fun. Soon, she began racing on a local
Hobie 33 and within a few years purchased her own, Risky Business.
With the help of an awesome crew, whom she still sails with, Risky
Business began a long winning streak, from Round the Island,
Green Turtle, Abaco, and Bahamas races to, most recently, finishing
1st
in Hobie Class in the Gulfstream Regatta with 3 bullets. Along the
way,
since 1996 the team has placed in the top three in the PHRF class
of
Columbus Day Regatta almost every year, won first in a fleet of
16 at
the Hobie Midwinters at SORC 2000, placed 2nd in the Hobie North
Americans 2000, as well as 1st in the Ft Lauderdale Hospice Regatta
in
both 1999 and 2001.
