David Schwartz is the president of GMT Composites, Inc. a company
that makes carbon fiber spars, rudders and other composite parts
for both marine and non-marine uses. David has been enjoying both
cruising and racing in offshore events for 35 years. "When
I decided to buy my first boat six years ago, I looked for a dual
purpose boat. The boat I found, a Lyman-Morse built, Seguin 40,
is comfortable to take on a two week cruise to Maine yet can be
raced successfully the next day by just bringing on the racing sails.
The only downside is that you don't get the surge in speed from
an 18000 pound boat that you can enjoy in a stripped out sport boat."
Joining David for the National Hospice Regatta are four members
of the regular crew on Mischief:
Jim Rostron trims the main and is the glue that holds the team together.
Jim and David have been racing together for twenty years.
Bob Manchester will do tactics and trim. He owned and successfully
campaigned a Tripp 37 for many years. He is also the only one of
us who has had much experience with sprits and asymmetrical spinnakers.
Peter Goldin is the other trimmer. He has an amazing collection
of funny stories and also has an uncanny ability to predict which
side of the course we should have gone to.
Will Rogers rounds out the group and will handle the front of the
boat. Will was an instructor at the Hurricane Island Outward Bound
School for a number of years. After putting up with the mistakes
of students, nothing we seem to get ourselves into during a race
bothers Will at all.
