WCSC Hospice Regatta
TBD
WCSC Hospice Regatta
October 19-21, 2007
Pink crew jerseys will be worn by the entire crew of the racing yacht SPIRIT during sailing in the Hospice Sailing Regatta at Western Carolina Sailing Club on October 19-21. The jerseys are in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month October. The Hospice Sailing Regatta has raised over $124,000 for Hospice of the Upstate in the last eight years. On the boat SPIRIT there are three people, two of whom are women. The helmswoman on SPIRIT, Kimberly Provost, actually shaved her head bald last fall to make a friend with breast cancer feel better facing chemotherapy.

Hot S'Yachts Hospice Regatta
October 18-20, 2002

"Inspired by Competition
Enhanced with Compassion"
On October 18-20, 2002, Western Carolina Sailing Club, a non-profit
organization, hosted the fourth annual Hot S'Yacht Hospice Regatta.
Over the previous three years this event has averaged a net contribution
to Hospice of the Upstate of $15,300 from registrations and corporate
sponsorships. The 2002 Regatta surpassed all previous years making
a net contribution to Hospice of the Upstate in the amount of $17,819
, a remarkable 77% return of the $23,016 gross registrations/contributions.
With this 2002 contribution, the Hot S'Yacht Hospice Regatta has made
a total net contribution to Hospice of the Upstate in excess of $65,000.
Additionally, the National Hospice Regatta Alliance distributed $622
to Hospice of the Upstate based on our participation in the National
Regatta Alliance.
It was truly an event filled with competition and compassion. Fifty-nine
sailboats and crews raced on three different courses over the two
days of racing. The Hospice Championship course sailed five races,
the Dinghy course sailed five races and the PHRF Distance course sailed
one race. Complete fleet by fleet results are attached as well as
the Hospice Championship results to determine the Hot S'Yacht Hospice
crew to travel to Annapolis in the Spring of 2003. Below are the individual
fleet winners:
PHRF Championship Course:
A Fleet - Don Corey - Ultimate 20
B Fleet - Joe Waters - Catalina 22 (OVERALL Winner of PHRF Championship
Course)
Catamarans - Nigel Pitt - RC 27
J24 - Roger Dougal
San Juan 21 - Dick Dommel
PHRF Distance Course:
A Fleet - Linton Lewis - S2 7.9
B Fleet - Randy Bannister - Oday 28
Dinghy Course:
Will DeHart - Laser
The weekend started Friday evening with a welcome party attended
by approximately 150 of the more than 250 sailors who would ultimately
participate in the regatta. Saturday morning featured a nice breakfast
during the mad last minute registration rush. Racing started at
1200 sharp with three races sailed on Saturday. Saturday evening
featured a social hour followed by an outstanding catered dinner
serving 235 adults and 20 Juniors. Dinner was followed by a short
raffle (more details later) and music and dancing. Sunday morning's
big breakfast featured made to order eggs and eggs on english muffins
with all the trimmings. Racing started at 1000 with two additional
races. Prior to the awards ceremony the regatta ended with a cookout
of hamburgers and hot dogs.
This year we presented a slightly different raffle. The raffle
committee decided to limit the number of items to six big items
and one bonus item. The six items: a TackTick Race Master donated
by Layline, a ladies bracelet donated by Bill Lacher and Stan Luthi,
a his and hers watch set with his being a Citizens Stars and Stripes
edition donated by Bill Lacher and Stan Luthi, a custom crafted
sailing chair for the den donated by Americraft Furniture and Leslie
Martin, a hand painted filled picnic basket donated by Steinmart
in Greenville and Foxfire and a $100 gift card from Sears Haywood
Mall in Greenville. The bonus item was a custom made 18x24 stained
glass rendition by Foothills Art Glass of the 2002 regatta artwork
and underwritten by an anonymous donor.
An interesting story regarding the TackTick and the stained glass.
The sailor, John Duke (of Hartwell, Ga.), who won the TackTick was
extremely gracious and upon winning decided it was a piece of equipment
that he really would never use. He stepped up and offered it for
auction with half of the proceeds going to Hospice. Another competitior,
who will certainly put it to good use, purchased the TackTick. At
this point in the evening we drew the name for the bonus stained
glass. Who should win but John Duke. This was what he really wanted
and the reason he purchased so many raffle tickets in the first
place was to get more bonus raffle prize tickets.
Thank you to all the volunteers who made this event so successful
and we thank you for your support.

Breaking
Out: Hot S'Yachts coming to Hartwell
By Scott Keepfer STAFF WRITER skeepfer@greenvillenews.com
Greenville's
Ed Sherman enjoys living on the edge. Specifically, that "edge"
where the difference between a 30-degree tilt and a 32-degree tilt
can mean the difference between sailing or sinking. "Going fast
in a sailboat may mean going eight miles an hour," said Sherman.
"But sailing is much more than that. It's the wind blowing in the
sails and the boat heeling (leaning) over. Everything in your world
is suddenly at 30 degrees.
"It's having water blowing over you and having
the wind in your face." That, indeed, is the name of the game when
it comes to sailing, a time-tested avocation that has found new
favor from the Great Lakes to Rhode Island and yes, even on Lake
Hartwell.
To wit: The second annual Hot S'Yacht
Hospice Regatta is scheduled for this weekend out of the Western
Carolina Sailing Club on Hartwell. Last year, the event attracted
63 boats and more than 300 participants from Georgia, Tennessee,
South Carolina and North Carolina, and organizers expected an even
bigger turnout for the upcoming event.
"I'm committed to this for
the benefit of hospice," said Mike Lague, a former Anderson resident
who despite living in New Jersey is spearheading the organization
of the races for the second straight year. "My biggest passion is
sailing. I've been doing it since I was 13 and haven't slowed down
since. But I'm now at the point where I'm doing a bit less of the
aggressive, competitive sailing and trying to do more family racing."
Enter the hospice event. Last year's
event raised $17,000 for the local hospice -- Anderson's John and
Callie Rainey House -- with the monies being designated for the
care and spirit-lifting of terminally ill persons.
Nationally, 13 total events raised
more than $700,000 for hospices a year ago. "I view this as sailing
for others," said Lague, who will drive 14 hours to compete in the
event. "I have been close to individuals who have passed away, and
so I see this as a chance to give something back." This year's event
will be one of 17 held nationally, with the winner at each site
advancing to the National Hospice Regatta Invitational Championship
scheduled for next March at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Last year's winner
at Lake Hartwell -- Joe Waters and crew of Columbia -- will be returning
to defend the title.
If you don't own a sailboat or aren't
confident enough in your sailing abilities yet to join in on the
races, you can still enjoy the races from the shoreline. "The point
of the club is 50 feet from some of the turning marks on the course,
so it's fantastic viewing," said Lague, referring to the club's
seven- acre grass field. "I've been to Newport, Bermuda, Key West
-- and there's no place that has a better ground-based spectator
viewing area." Lague suggests bringing lawn chairs, a blanket, binoculars,
cooler and a picnic basket to enjoy the regatta-viewing experience
to its fullest.
Sherman, who will debut his Etchells
racing yacht at the competition, says there is plenty to watch,
what with brightly colored spinnakers and competitions slated in
10 classes. Class races are generally 3-4 miles in length, navigating
a triangular set of buoys, while a handicap, or Performance Handicap
Racing Formula (PHRF) race -- which pits boats from a variety of
divisions -- will be closer to 20 miles long. "That race is a lot
of fun," Sherman said. "My boat is a lot faster than say, a Catalina
22, but in order for me to win, I've got to beat him by 10 minutes
or so." Now, all that remains is for the weather to cooperate. "We
expecting and hoping for 15-20 knot winds that day," Sherman said.
"We want whitecaps on the lake. That would just be beautiful."

LETTERS TO THE CURMUDGEON (leweck@earthlink.net)
Letters selected to be printed may be edited for clarity, space
(250 words max) or to exclude unfounded speculation or personal
attacks. This is not a bulletin board or a chat room - you only
get one letter per subject, so give it your best shot and don't
whine if others disagree.
From Ed Sherman - There is an unsung,
J80, regular working man, weekend warrior, sailor who lives in NJ,
who for the past year has been organizing a big regatta in South
Carolina-from that distance he did it-snagging corporate sponsors.
The regatta, held last weekend, was for charity-HOSPICE. This guy's
name is Mike Lague and he trailered the eight hundred miles down
for the weekend, worked with his wife Maggie all weekend, decorating
the clubhouse, cooking, organizing, greeting sailors as they trailered
in and sailing.
Mike not only raised about $20,000
for Hospice, he beat the two other J80 boats...and he won the entire
HOSPICE Hot S'Yacht Regatta 2000 (55 boats). Then he packs up his
tent, loads up the Expedition and retraces the eight hundred miles
to be back home to the kids and work in NJ Tuesday. Now he moves
on to Florida in the spring for a chance in the HOSPICE Nationals.
This is MY hero.

Hot S’Yacht HOSPICE Regatta Hosted
by WCSC
| 1999 Benefitting Hospice: |
| HOSPICE of the Upstate |
The 1999 Hot S'Yacht HOSPICE Regatta
was held on October 23-24. This year we introduced the concept of
having the regatta for the benefit of Hospice of the Upstate. I am
pleased to say this regatta was a huge success generating more than
$17,000 for this worthy cause. Our event was 1 of 13 Hospice Regattas
that are part of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance. Being a member
of the Alliance makes our event a qualifying event for the National
Championship to be held in Annapolis, MD in May 2000. We
had 60 boats racing on 3 courses. The Championship Series which
consisted of 29 boats in 4 classes (J24s, SJ21s, PHRF A and PHRF
B) raced for the privilege to represent our regatta at the National
Championship. Joe Waters and crew from Columbia Sailing Club, Lake
Murray, S.C., sailed aboard "Pull My Finger" and won the honors
with 3 first place finishes in the 5 race regatta. The Cruising
Class consisted of 24 boats, which raced around government buoys
to the dam and back on Saturday and off the point on Sunday. The
7 boat Junior Fleet was well represented
with some of WCSC finest up and coming "Rock Star" sailors. The
Junior Fleet included; 1st Place Stanton Bost and Park Tupper Columbia
Sailing Club, Lake Murray, S.C., 2nd Place Claire and Alex Wolcott,
WCSC, 3rd Place Jonathan Kovach, WCSC, and other finishers Jason
Byl, Chip Lapierre, Doug Nechodom, Hart Moede. Hal Smith and the
race committee crew did a fine job in making sure we maximized the
great conditions.
The
regatta kicked-off on Friday night with a Sponsor Appreciation Party
aboard the 76ft houseboat, "Joint Venture", which was provided by
Stuart Jackson and Mike Stephens. More than 200 racers, sponsors
and guest partied until the beer ran out at 10:00 PM. Following
racing on Saturday, 300 attendees enjoyed the party tents
and music by Benny Whitten and Kathleen Tod. The Saturday evening
dinner tables were graced with fine china and linen. Dinner was
followed by raffles and the humor of Roddy Gray. The evening ended
with many folks snuggled around the huge bonfire at the point. Sunday's
racing, which was observed by many aboard a 62ft observation houseboat
provided by Bill Trent was followed by burgers on the grill. More
than 270 hamburgers were served to the attendees. The awards ceremony
concluded the event at 3:30 PM. The local Fox network evening news
included an interview of Lee Harris, Director of Hospice, and video
clips of the racing.
This event was made possible
by the significant contributions of our sponsors Bell Atlantic Mobile,
Jacobs Chuck Mfg, Eltrax, Custom Steel & Wood, West Marine, Franks
Beverage Distributing, JBK Racing, Carolina First, Publix and The
Lague Family and the support of the local Hospice Volunteers. Also,
special thanks to Robert and Lou Rainey for their generous support.
The Hot S'Yacht HOSPICE 2000
Regatta will be held on October 21-22. The 2000 event will be BIGGER
and BETTER than 1999. Maggie and I have agreed to Chair the event
again. However, we need your help. We have established BIG goals
and HOSPICE of the Upstate needs our help. We are looking for volunteers
to help with sponsorship solicitation, food and entertainment planning
and event organization.
