On Saturday, May 19, 2012, dozens of colorful sails and magnificent sailboats from all of South Florida will compete off the shores of Fort Lauderdale Beach in the 2nd Annual Hospice by the Sea Regatta. This highly anticipated annual sailing event is just one stop on the National Hospice Regatta Alliance’s racing circuit. The overall winner of 2011 Hospice by the Sea Regatta, Magic Marine, skippered by Bret Moss, qualified as Hospice by the Sea’s representative at the 2012 National Hospice Regatta Championship, which will be held in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The 2nd annual Hospice by the Sea Regatta is a wonderful way to enjoy a fun-filled weekend, while supporting a great organization – Hospice by the Sea, Inc.

Following a day of spirited racing, sailors, families and supporters of Hospice by the Sea, Inc. are invited to attend the 2012 Post-Race Awards Ceremony and Celebration at the Coral Ridge Yacht Club, where awards are presented to top finishers in each class.

RACING CLASSES:

PHRF – PHRF of Southeast Florida Certificate Required
ARC* – Assigned Rating Class (see note below)
ONE DESIGN – Ocean Racing One Design Fleets (5 boat minimum)
MULTIHULL – MASF Rating Certificate Required or One Design Class
CRUISING CANVAS – For yachts not ordinarily raced. Only working sails allowed (i.e. main, jib, mizzen. No spinnakers or specialty sails allowed)
*Note – Race Committee will assign yachts a rating based on information supplied with entry.

In addition awards for top race finishers, three perpetual trophies have been established to honor the boats that raise the most donations for Hospice by the Sea, Inc., including the Hospice by the Sea Fundraising Challenge Award in honor of the late Diana Stephenson, the Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club Top Fundraiser Award and the Wes Holmes Memorial Regatta Fundraising Award, which is presented by the Gulfstream Sailing Club.

South Florida Sailors Prepare for the 2012 Hospice by the Sea Regatta

More than 50 sailboats from throughout South Florida are expected to race in the 2012
Hospice by the Sea Regatta on Saturday, May 19, 2012. Beginning at 11:00 a.m., skippers and crews competing in five racing classes will test their skills on a 12-mile course just off the shores of Fort Lauderdale Beach. For the past 16 years, this highly anticipated sailing event has raised funds to support hospice care for patients and families residing in South Florida.

After an exciting day of racing, both sailors and supporters of Hospice by the Sea are invited to attend the Post-race Awards Ceremony and Celebration at the prestigious Coral Ridge Yacht Club. More than 300 guests will gather at 6:30 p.m. for an evening filled with live entertainment and casual waterfront dining. Tickets to the Post-race Awards Ceremony and Celebration may be purchased for $50 per person.

The 2012 Hospice by the Sea Regatta is proudly hosted by the Lauderdale Yacht Club, Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club and the Gulfstream Sailing Club. This event is opened to all competitive racers and is just one stop on the National Hospice Regatta Alliance’s racing circuit. The winner of this year’s Regatta will qualify to compete in the 2013 Hospice Regattas National Championship, which will be held in St. Petersburg, Florida.

trophies will be awarded to boats that raise the most funds in support of Hospice by the
Sea, Inc. This year’s fundraising awards include the Diana Stephenson Fundraising Challenge Award (presented to the Regatta’s top overall fundraiser); the Lauderdale Yacht Club Fundraising Trophy; the Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club Fundraising Trophy; and the Wes Holmes Memorial Fundraising Trophy (given by the Gulfstream Sailing Club).

Sailors Compete Off the Shores of Ft. Lauderdale in the 2011 Hospice by the Sea Regatta

0n Saturday, May 14th, dozens of colorful sails and magnificent sailboats from all of South Florida competed off the shores of Fort Lauderdale Beach in the 2011 Hospice by the Sea Regatta. Sailors in various racing classes participated in a twelve-mile race to help raise funds in support of Hospice by the Sea, Inc., a not-for-profit provider of hospice care and services in Broward and Palm Beach counties.

This highly anticipated annual sailing event is now in its 15th year and is just one stop on the National Hospice Regatta Alliance’s racing circuit. The overall winner of this year’s Regatta, Magic Marine, skippered by Bret Moss, now qualifies as Hospice by the Sea’s representative at the 2012 National Hospice Regatta Championship, which will be held in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Prior to the start of the race, Fred Mortensen, Chaplain for Hospice by the Sea, provided a blessing of the boats. The race committee boat, headed by Principal Race Officer (PRO) Gaylord “Jay” Wood, directed the start of the race just off the shores of Ft. Lauderdale beach at 11:00 a.m.

The Aquadistant, a 42 ft. Sunseeker Mustique, captained by Mark Lowell and Susan Schultz, served as the viewing boat for the race. On board was Paula J. Alderson, President and CEO, Hospice by the Sea, Inc. who commented, “We are thrilled to have been chosen by Ft. Lauderdale’s sailing clubs as the beneficiary of this exciting event. It was a pleasure to work with such a dedicated group of sailors and their crews. We look forward to making the Hospice by the Sea Regatta a major annual event for South Florida.”Following a day of spirited racing, sailors, families and supporters of Hospice by the Sea, Inc. gathered for the Post-Race Awards Ceremony and Celebration, in the historic Maxwell Room at the Downtowner, Fort Lauderdale.

Awards were presented to the top finishers in each class: David Wallace out-sailed 12 boats on “Bandanna” in the ARC (Assigned Rating Class) class; Mike Kiely brought “Dufour 375” in at the head of the Cruising Canvas class; Skipper Mark Jones sailed “Razz Ma Tazz” into first place of the Hobie 16 class; Valeri Safiullin finished first on “Breeze” in the PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet) class; and top finisher, Bret Moss, sailed “Magic Marine” winning both the Multihull class and Best Overall Performance.

In addition awards for top race finishers, three perpetual trophies were presented to boats that raised the most donations for Hospice by the Sea, Inc. In honor of the late Diana Stephenson, The Hospice by the Sea Fundraising Challenge Award, named in her honor, went to the “Bonnie”, skippered by Albert Diran; the Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club Top Fundraiser Award went to Hans and Gabriele Conrad on “Karma”; and David Wallace and Bandana” won the Wes Holmes Memorial Regatta Fundraising A ward. “
