Regatta Benefits Hospice — Yacht Club Raises $65K for Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 – Through a calm fog resting on the surface of the Santa Barbara harbor, and a slow breeze hugging pelicans close to one another, a cluster of sailboats crept across the ocean’s face on Sunday, September 13, bent, it might appear, on capturing Jack Sparrow, Davy Jones, and the Kraken all in one bag.

But in truth, these floating urchins were giving up their booty in collective thousands.

The Santa Barbara Yacht Club hosted its fifth annual Yachts of Love Charity Regatta event to benefit the local Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care Organization thrhttp://www.independent.com/photos/2009/sep/15/17533/ough raffle prizes, a hearty selection of food, and, above all, sail boat races.

With close to 150 sailors, yacht club members, and supporters in attendance—including Santa Barbara Fire Chief David Sadecki and radio personality Laura Schlesinger—Regatta chairperson Tony Papa hoped this year’s event would ring in more than last year’s total of $75,000. It came close.

The Yacht Club, which was established seven years after the end of the Civil War, has 750 members who, said Papa, have “traditionally participated in a variety of charitiesâ€ and done much to contribute to their community. “The Visiting Nurses have been around for over 100 years,â€ said Papa. “They are dynamically local.â€ – - Bianca Licata, Santa Barbara Independent, Inc.

NY – Oswego County Hospice Cup Regatta June 13, 2009

On June 13th, OYC hosted the 10th Annual Hospice Regatta in conjunction with the “Walk and Run for Hope, and it was, to put it politely, a smashing success.  Thanks to a contingent of competitors from Rochester and Sodus Bay Yacht Clubs (which included the eventual winner and runner up), 27 boats competed in this year’s event for the honor of representing OYC at the National Hospice Alliance Regatta to be held at the Rochester Yacht Club in 2010.  Constellation Energy was the title sponsor. Preliminary figures point to over $17,000 being raised to benefit this important service to the Oswego community.

Though the winds were light, the nearly daily rain for the previous three weeks held off, and Principal Race Officer Hank Stuart, who returned to run our regatta for the third time, was able to get off three strong races (though the last one was shortened by a leg as the wind curled up and fell asleep). Three Spinnaker divisions and one White Sail composed the fleet, and the competition was fierce for both division and overall honors, with only a few points separating the victors.

Peter Quackenbush from Sodus Bay Yacht Club skippered his J-33 “Moongator to the Oswego title,  beating out Kiki Werner’s “Pee Wee, a J-24 from Rochester Yacht Club.  Fran Enwright, racing his Beneatu 33 “Sail A Vie from the Oswego Yacht Club, finished in 3rd Place.

7th Annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta held August 29, 2009

More than $186,000 netted at Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta
Event united health care professionals, sailing community, local businesses and families to support hospice patients

SAN DIEGO — Sharp HospiceCare, Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing Association hosted the Seventh Annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta on Friday, Aug. 28 and Saturday, Aug. 29. The event netted a total of more than $186,000, which will support Sharp HospiceCare’s program to build hospice homes in San Diego.

The event launched Friday evening at the Hotel Del Coronado with a pre-race dinner and program emceed by former KNSD weather anchor, Pat Brown. The sold-out gathering included dinner for more than 360 guests, a live and silent auction and dancing. On Saturday, 19 privately owned yachts sponsored 270 guests who enjoyed a view of the race while on the water.

Saturday’s regatta drew 48 sailboat racers who competed on a course stretching from the north end to the south end of the San Diego Bay. The boat, Anarchy, skippered by Scot Tempesta, won the overall regatta, and will qualify to compete in the 2010 National Hospice Regatta Championship in Rochester, New York.

Two teams of doctors participated in an exhibition race, Physicians’ Challenge, aboard legendary America’s Cup sailing yachts, as part of fundraising efforts. Winning the event were doctors from Sharp Community Medical Group, who crewed Stars and Stripes, beating out challengers from Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group aboard Abracadabra.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Sharp HospiceCare, an organization that provides comprehensive care and compassionate support for patients and their families struggling with a life-limiting illness. The money raised directly funds Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice campaign, an initiative to build hospice homes in San Diego. The campaign has led to the completion of the organization’s second hospice home in Del Cerro.

Grossmont Healthcare District, the title sponsor of the regatta, donated $30,000 to the event.

NY – Youngstown/Lake Ontario – Jack Beatty Hospice Memorial Regatta July 11, 2009

niagaragif

On behalf of Niagara Hospice, I would like to thank everyone who supported the 2009 Jack Beatty Hospice Memorial Regatta! The Niagara River Cruise & Clambake took place at the Youngstown Yacht Club on Friday July 10, 2009 and the NHRA Regatta was held on Saturday July 11, 2009.

The proceeds from the regatta provide revenue for Niagara Hospice to use in their work with individuals and families dealing with end-of-life illnesses. Since 1988, Niagara Hospice has served over 13,000 Niagara County residents and their families. No individual is denied Hospice care regardless of his or her ability to pay. Families who are uninsured or underinsured can take comfort in the fact that hospice services are available to them.

Next year’s event will take place on July 9th and 10th. If you would like to participate, boarding passes and race registration forms will be available by following the instructions on this website starting in January of 2010. To date we have raised over $200,000 for Niagara Hospice. Please continue as our partner in supporting this very worthwhile cause.

On behalf of all the patients and families that Hospice serves, I would like to thank you in advance for your participation and support!

Christiansted, VI, – October 5, 2009: A redesigned website, free online registration and instantly available race results are some of the new features of the 2010 St. Croix Yacht Club Hospice Regatta, according to Julie San Martin, regatta director. The annual party with international racing is scheduled for February 19-21, 2010, at the club in Teague Bay.

“Skippers and crews of keelboats, cruisers, Optimists and multi-hulls should find the improvements to their liking, she said, “and regatta management will be better able to put on a good race. The web address remains, www.stcroixregatta.com. “Sponsors will like the direct links to their websites, too, San Martin added, “Visitors can access the sites by clicking on a logo for more information.

The web designer, Luiz Kahl of Interactive Creations, used visually appealing graphics, organizational tabs, and links to island resources, regatta sponsors and racing management functions to make the user experience functional and easy. VA – Rappahannock – Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta

Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta
October 9-11, 2009

Hinkley_05
Sailors do not have to be skilled racers to enjoy the weekend.  Each year we have a considerable number of first-time participants.  Considering first-time participation? Click here.

The Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta is open to monohull boats of a design that is 25 years old or older.  The minimum length is 18 feet.  Singlehanders require approval by the race committee. Participating boats range from classic pre World War II yachts to Catalinas, J24s, and Flying Scotts.

Shore-side events begin Friday October 9 with happy hour and music at Yankee Point Marina.
Saturday the race is on a triangular course.  Sunday is a pursuit race in which the boats with the highest ratings (slowest boats) start first.

Skippers choose the level of competition they desire.  They may select either the Flying Cloud Division with its friendlier competition or the Lightning Division which requires a current 2009 PHRF rating for Chesapeake Bay.

The winning skipper in the Lightning Division will be asked to represent the “Turkey Shoot in the Hospice Regattas National Championship at which the winners of the 28 local Hospice Regattas compete. The 2010 will be held in June on Lake Ontario near Rochester, New York.

In the Flying Cloud Division the Sunday pursuit race will include a special competition for wooden boats built to a 1965 or earlier design.  These classic wooden boats will be eligible for both the Flying Cloud awards and the Riverside Health System Wobbly Compass Trophy.

In addition to the races, all skippers compete for the trophy awarded for the most beautiful boat. The “Turkey Shoot” is a major fund raiser for hospices serving eight counties on both sides of the Rappahannock River.

At the completion of the racing the Awards Ceremony will be at Yankee Point Marina.  Presentation of trophies for individual races, Virginia Spirit Cup Trophy, Wobbly Compass Trophy for Wooden Boats, Most Beautiful Classic Boat Trophy and Fundraising Boats.

Hosted by Yankee Point Marina of Lancaster Virginia.
