The Harbor Hospice Chronicle Regatta was held on a beautiful and breezy day at the Muskegon Yacht Club. Twenty three boats sailed in the competition. The overall winner was Peerless, skippered by Brian Torresen.
Sponsorship was the key to raising $20,000 in the third year of this event. Major sponsors include the following: Torresen Marine, Inc., Hines Corporation, Trophy House – Jones Sports, Leila Poppen Reynolds, and The Muskegon Chronicle.
For the first time, skippers and crew got pledges for their boats in what we titled the Judy Miller Memorial Challenge. Judy was a founding member of our Harbor Hospice Chronicle Regatta Committee. This effort was very successful and promises growth in years to come. This year’s winner of the challenge: The crew of ‘Wooly Bully’ skippered by Gary and Cassy Marchido.
More than 150 people enjoyed a Pig Roast that followed the Awards Ceremony.

Few people know Muskegon Lake the way Brian Torresen knows Muskegon Lake.
Torresen lives in the Bluffton neighborhood, works a few blocks away at the family business he grew up in, Torresen Marine, and sails smack dab between the two at Muskegon Yacht Club — giving him intimate knowledge of the peculiar winds and changing conditions on Muskegon Lake, considered one of the best inland sailing lakes in the country.
“My world is pretty small right now, but I like that,” said Torresen, 37. “I used to sail all over the world, but now I’m perfectly happy to be here.”
Torresen cashed in on his local knowledge at Saturday’s Harbor Hospice Chronicle Cup regatta, skippering Peerless to the overall title.

On behalf of Niagara Hospice, I would like to thank everyone who supported the 2009 Jack Beatty Hospice Memorial Regatta! The Niagara River Cruise & Clambake took place at the Youngstown Yacht Club on Friday, July 10, 2009 and the Regatta was held on Saturday, July 11, 2009. Together, with your support, we were able to raise over $24,000, bringing our 10-year total to $209,000!
The proceeds from the Regatta provide revenue for Niagara Hospice to use in their work with individuals and families dealing with end-of-life illnesses. Since 1988, Niagara Hospice has served over 13,000 Niagara County residents and their families. No individual is denied Hospice care regardless of his or her ability to pay. Families who are uninsured or underinsured can take comfort in the fact that Hospice services are available to them.
The 2010 Niagara River Cruise will take place on Friday, July 9th and is open to the public. Boarding passes are now available and can be accessed by selecting the “Niagara River Cruise” link on the left side of the page. For those skippers interested in racing in the Jack Beatty Hospice Memorial Regatta scheduled for Saturday, July 10th, race registration forms will be available by early May.
On behalf of all the patients and families that Hospice serves, I would like to thank you in advance for your participation and support!
Paul R. Beatty Jr., Chairman
