Harbor Hospice Chronicle Cup Regatta – Muskegon, MI

The Harbor Hospice Chronicle Regatta was held on a beautiful and breezy day at the Muskegon Yacht Club. Twenty three boats sailed in the competition. The overall winner was Peerless, skippered by Brian Torresen.

Sponsorship was the key to raising $20,000 in the third year of this event. Major sponsors include the following: Torresen Marine, Inc., Hines Corporation, Trophy House – Jones Sports, Leila Poppen Reynolds, and The Muskegon Chronicle.

For the first time, skippers and crew got pledges for their boats in what we titled the Judy Miller Memorial Challenge. Judy was a founding member of our Harbor Hospice Chronicle Regatta Committee. This effort was very successful and promises growth in years to come. This year’s winner of the challenge: The crew of ‘Wooly Bully’ skippered by Gary and Cassy Marchido.

More than 150 people enjoyed a Pig Roast that followed the Awards Ceremony.

Few people know Muskegon Lake the way Brian Torresen knows Muskegon Lake.

Torresen lives in the Bluffton neighborhood, works a few blocks away at the family business he grew up in, Torresen Marine, and sails smack dab between the two at Muskegon Yacht Club — giving him intimate knowledge of the peculiar winds and changing conditions on Muskegon Lake, considered one of the best inland sailing lakes in the country.

“My world is pretty small right now, but I like that,” said Torresen, 37. “I used to sail all over the world, but now I’m perfectly happy to be here.”

Torresen cashed in on his local knowledge at Saturday’s Harbor Hospice Chronicle Cup regatta, skippering Peerless to the overall title.
