HOSPICE CUP INC. ANNOUNCES 2011 RACE DATE

Event will celebrate 30 Year Anniversary

Annapolis, MD — The Hospice Cup XXX – America’s largest charity regatta – will be held Saturday, September 24, 2011. Entering its 30th year of racing on the Chesapeake Bay, to date the Hospice Cup has raised more than $8 million to support Hospice programs in local communities around the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. area.

“Hospice Cup is a wonderful opportunity to bring hospices in the region together to raise awareness of the hospice mission,” says Brien Jones-Lantzy, Hospice Cup, Inc. President. “The great thing about this event is that you don’t have to be a racer to get in on the action. Volunteers are in the middle of the scene and spectators can enjoy the race from the comfort of a yacht and enjoy a catered lunch, open bar, and live commentary.”

About Hospice Cup

Hospice Cup funds help to pay the expenses not covered by Medicare or private insurance. These dollars enable the hospices to provide skilled compassionate care, comfort and dignity to the terminally ill, their families and friends, regardless of their ability to pay. Hospice enables patients to carry on alert, pain-controlled lives so their last days may be spent in comfort, at home or in home-like settings. Hospice care concentrates on care, not cure. Bereavement counseling and support groups are part of hospice services after the loss of a loved one.

The annual Hospice Cup regatta is a cooperative effort. It is organized by the all-volunteer Hospice Cup, Inc.(HCI) Board of Directors, an Executive Director, participating area hospices and hundreds of volunteers. The race is managed by Shearwater Sailing Club and assisted by Storm Trysail Club Chesapeake Station.

The 2011 participating hospices include: Hospice of the Chesapeake, Capital Hospice, Montgomery Hospice, Chester River Home Care & Hospice, and Talbot Hospice. Each hospice must meet the standards of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.

The Hospice Cup race is sanctioned by the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA) and counts for CBYRA season-long High Point competition. Hospice Cup, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization chartered under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia for the purposes of conducting a benefit yacht race and related events. Hospice Cup, Inc. is also a proud member of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance.

Stein Hospice – Sandusky Ohio, beneficiary of a local hospice regatta

Stein Hospice’s mission has now spread statewide with the opening of a 22-bed hospice unit at the Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown, located east of Cincinnati. The new Stein unit opened Jan. 27 following a ribbon cutting and reception attended by 120 people.

Thomas Moe, Director of the Ohio Department of Veteran Services, (pictured here) thanked Stein leadership for their willingness to enter into a unique public-private partnership “which will make it possible to provide a vital service to our most vulnerable Veterans.”

Stein Hospice President/CEO Jan Bucholz told the audience that it is a privilege to work with Veterans and pledged that our staff will do everything possible to make sure life is good for as long as it lasts for our Veteran patients.

The Georgetown home is the first Veterans Home in the country to offer hospice services in a designated in-house unit. Stein was selected to enter into this partnership with the state because of its track record at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky.

Festivities at the opening included bagpiper music, tours of the new unit and refreshments. Many elected officials attended, including State Rep. Danny Bubp, whose district includes Brown County, and representatives of U.S. Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman and U.S. Rep Steve Austria.
