DIESEL Wins J/70s Hospice Cup

MIRAGE Nips 105s, AUNT JEAN Dusts 35s
(Annapolis, MD)- This past weekend’s 31st Annual Hospice Cup in Annapolis – one of the country’s oldest and longest-running charity regattas- saw a lot of boats come out and play, especially seven brand new J/70s in their first Chesapeake Bay one-design regatta!  While J/105s posted the biggest class, the J/70′s were turning lots of heads as they worked the waves downwind. Those that came out found great breeze with 12-15 kt southerlies, big waves and not a cloud in the sky.

The Hospice Cup, an annual tradition of mixing sailboat racing and charity, has not always brought good sailing weather to Annapolis. But anyone who participated in this year’s edition of the event on Saturday, September 22 has erased all bad weather from memory… What a day to be on the Bay! Great breeze, tight competition on the race course, fantastic food at the shoreside party, an auction, upbeat live music and all with the best views in Annapolis.

31st Annual Hospice Cup — giving and getting

Action from last weekend’s 31st Annual Hospice Cup in Annapolis – one of the country’s oldest and longest-running charity regattas.  Those that came out found great breeze, big waves and not a cloud in the sky.  While J/105s posted the biggest class, there were also seven new J/70′s out turning lots of heads as they worked the waves downwind.  This shot of Scott and Carl Gitchell’s J/105 Tenacious gives you a taste of the challenges that shallow water and big air brings on the Chesapeake.

HOSPICE CUP XXXI SELECTS 2012 ARTIST FOR ANNUAL POSTER

Annapolis, MD – The painting, “Spinnaker Finish,” by Kathyrn Leonard was selected to be represented at the Hospice Cup XXXI – America’s largest charity regatta. The event will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2012 on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay. Ms. Leonard’s painting can be viewed at www.hospicecup.org.

Community members selected Ms. Leonard’s painting during a reception at The Circle Gallery in Annapolis on February 10, 2012.  Ms. Leonard, a native of Annapolis, is a full-time artist who also teaches art classes to adults and children at Studio 7.  Her artwork is recognizable for her distinctive use of textures, colors and patterns. When she is not painting, Ms. Leonard is a part-time chef, cooking for sailing teams and occasionally travels with them overseas.

“My mother was cared for by hospice so I feel especially proud to be a part of this wonderful fundraiser. Hospice really helped my family so contributing this painting is my way of giving back,” said Ms. Leonard. The limited edition autographed artwork will be available for $35 at various Hospice Cup, I

nc. events or by emailing hospicecup@aol.com.

Entering its 31st year of racing on the Chesapeake Bay, to date the Hospice Cup has raised more than $8 million to support Hospice programs in local communities around the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. area.

Maryland’s Supportive Sailing Regattas By: Allison Eatough

No one in Cedric Lewis’s family has needed hospice care, but for the past 15 years hospice has touched his life.

Each of those years, the lifelong sailor raced the annual Hospice Cup charity regatta to help raise awareness of hospice care. Last year, Lewis and racing partner Fredrik Salvesen won.

“You can’t really go more than one person away and find someone who hasn’t used hospice care,” the Annapolis resident said. “It really is an amazing way for people to pass with dignity and without pain.”

The Hospice Cup

Billed as America’s largest racing regatta, Hospice Cup is one of several area races designed to raise money and awareness for medical and support care. With causes ranging from leukemia to the physically- and developmentally-challenged, the events have all found successful homes in Maryland.

A hospice is a program or facility that provides care to those in the final stages of a terminal illness. Care focuses on comfort and quality of life. Bereavement support is also available after a loved one dies.

Today, hospices can be found nationwide. But 30 years ago, when Hospice Cup began, hospice treatment was an “unknown entity,” said Karma O’Neill, executive director of Hospice Cup, Inc.

In 1982, Virginia Holland Brown, a member of the Development Committee for Hospice of Northern Virginia, Inc., was searching for a unique way to raise money for the hospice. After talking with Josephine Knoerr Erkiletian, a St. Michaels property owner, and Al Van Metre, a local sailor and businessman, the charity sailing regatta was born.

Other hospices throughout Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. quickly joined the effort. Since its inception, Hospice Cup has raised more than $8 million to support hospice programs.

Most hospices use the event as a “springboard” for their individual fundraising, O’Neill said. Others, like Talbot Hospice Foundation in Easton, rely on the event to help fund their programs.

At Talbot, Hospice Cup money goes toward programs like Pathways – a pre-hospice program providing non-medical support services to Talbot County residents with life-limiting illnesses.

“It’s a wonderful event to be a part of because it spreads the word about hospice, which is a difficult subject for a lot of people,” said Kate Cox, associate director of the Talbot Hospice Foundation. “We’re happy to be a part of it.”

In addition to Talbot, hospices benefiting from this year’s event are Capital Hospice, Chester River Home Care and Hospice, Hospice of the Chesapeake and Montgomery Hospice.

Hospice Cup XXX kicks off September 24 at the mouth of the Severn River. The race is managed by Shearwater Sailing Club and assisted by Storm Trysail Club Chesapeake Station. It is sanctioned by the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA). A special Hospice Class is available for novice racers. Overall, organizers expect about 100 boats to participate.
