541 Hospice Regatta — August 18, 2012 St. Joseph, MI

Saturday the St.Joe Benton Harbor Elks 541 hosted the 541 Hospice Regatta. There was  a sailboat race on Lake Michigan and a big party afterwards at the Lodge. Those attending enjoyed food, a silent auction and entertainment, all proceeds benefit the local Hospice organizations.

Race results from the first annual 541 Hospice Regatta:

Our own Rush (the lone SBEYC race boat) qualifies to participate in the Hospice National Championship to be held next Spring – April 11-14, 2013 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Three races in light and variable winds. Good test of sailing skills and patience. Light air racing takes concentration to be done well.

This Saturday the St.Joe Benton Harbor Elks 541 is hosting the 541 Hospice Regatta. There will be a sailboat race on Lake Michigan and a big party afterwards at the Lodge. There will be food, a silent auction and entertainment, all proceeds to benefit the local Hospice organizations.

On August 18, 2012, the 541 Hospice Regatta will be held on Lake Michigan near the St Joseph river inlet, followed by a fundraising party and silent auction. We are asking for your support in the form of cash donations, items to sell at our silent auction, or items to be included in our skipper give-away bags which could also be in the form of gift certificates for products or services available at your business or organization.

541 Hospice Regatta is a sailing race sponsored by the St Joseph/Benton Harbor Elks Yacht Club, Michigan. Your donations and participation will benefit Hospice at Home in St. Joseph, Michigan as well as the National Hospice Alliance.

Sailing Race conducted according to the US Sailing Association Racing Rules of Sailing – 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Award flags.

Lady Skipper Regatta Earns Over $100,000 For Lory’s Place

St. Joseph, MI (August 30, 2010) – The seventh annual Dr. Lory Schults Memorial Lady Skipper Regatta on August 21, raised over $100,000 for Lory’s Place, the area’s only grief healing and bereavement resource center for children and their families.

The annual event consisted of a sailing regatta, raffle, and dinner auction held in memory of local physician, Dr. Lory Schults, who tragically died in an automobile accident in 2004. “We had eight boats, 55 lady sailors, and over 300 people involved in the event,” states Lisa Bartoszek, Director of Lory’s Place. This year the event raised over $100,000 to help cover the costs of serving hundreds of children and their families from Allegan, Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties in Michigan, as well as from Elkhart and South Bend in Indiana. In 2009, 658 grieving children and adults participated in peer support groups at Lory’s Place, 530 children were supported through school outreach groups, and 957 people were served through walk-in visits, phone, email, outreach education, and crisis response.

Over 100 people participated in the sailing event with over 300 involved overall. Moody Blue, skippered by Darcy Miller, won the Spinnaker division. Rush, skippered by Josephine Woodruff, won the Jib & Main division. Panera Bread provided a wonderful lunch at West Basin Marina. Celebrations continued intothe evening at the Vineland Center with an elegant dinner and spirited auction attended by nearly 300 dedicated supporters.

Lory’s Place is a bereavement service of Hospice at Home and was created to help children and their families work through their grief so they can become capable, healthy, and optimistic about the future. The services are free to all who need them. Lory’s Place is fully funded by the generous donations and gifts of our community through events such as the Lady Skipper Regatta.

St. Joseph MI Hospice Regatta

Congratulations to the St. Joseph MI hospice regatta! August 21 started with light rain but quickly improved, with 55 lady sailors on 8 boats. Dinner & auction for 265 guests also successful, with payments still adding to the $25,500 raised for hospice through sponsors. Most important, many more people learned about Lory’s Place community bereavement center that gives hope & strength to every grieving
child.

MI-St. Joseph, 6th annual Dr. Lory Schults Memorial Lady Skipper Regatta

“Thank you for giving me Lory’s Place…� These few words say it all.  Your generosity to the sixth annual Dr. Lory Schults Memorial Lady Skipper Regatta makes it possible for children and adults who are in the midst of chaos and stormy weather to have a safe place until the waters calm. This year we reflected on the generosity of our community and the loving hand it has offered thousands of participants since our opening in November of 2004.  Your support to our event helped us raise over $100,000 to continue providing services for grieving children and their families.

On August 22, for the first time in six years, the weather was unsafe for our Lady Skippers. We postponed the sailing aspect of our event until October 3, when it will be combined with the annual St. Joseph River Yacht Club Chili Regatta. We hope that you will consider joining us at the Yacht Club on that date to set sail with the Lady Skippers in a morning sail followed by the men serving up delicious chili for all.

Our evening dinner and auction continued as planned with 270 friends and supporters coming together with giving hearts.  The program and spirited auction overflowed with love, compassion, and giving for the children and families touched by Lory’s Place.

Thank you for contributing to the extraordinary success of our sixth annual Dr. Lory Schults Memorial Lady Skipper Regatta. We hope that you reflect on the gift that you have provided to those working through grief at a time when they most need it.  Our program year has begun and hundreds of children and their families from Allegan, Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties in Michigan, as well as from Elkhart and South Bend in Indiana, are taking the courageous step of accessing the bereavement resource services of Lory’s Place – at no charge.  New this year is a Suicide Loss group for adults who have felt the pain of losing someone to suicide.
